One of its first abbots was Stefan brother of St Sergii Radonezhskii. The existing two-storey stone cathedral was constructed in 1693-1696. In 1929, it was closed down and the bell tower was destroyed. In 1991, the cathedral was returned to the Orthodox Church and reconsecrated.
