A replica of a Russian provincial tavern from the time of Nicholas I, and named after the central hero of Gogol's 'The Inspector'. The interior is styled along the lines presented in the screen version of the play which starred noted Russian actors Nikita Mikhalkov, Oleg Yankovskii and Yevgenii Morozov. There are three halls, accommodating thirty, ten and twenty persons, plus a VIP room. Dark wooden galleries and furniture are in harmony with the crimson wallpaper of the main hall. The floors and the ceilings are constructed from old unpainted planks, which only add to the style of a small provincial Russian inn. Two other halls have traditional Russian stripy wallpaper and white ceilings and big windows facing onto a pretty Moscow yard. Dishes are quotes or chapter headings taken from Gogol's famous sayings. Dumplings with deer meat are called 'Sunday stories of Judge Liapkin-Tiapkin'. And 'The Duck that did not fly to the middle of the Dnepr river' is cooked in cranberry and honey sauce. The milk piglet stuffed with buckwheat porridge, mushrooms, bacon crisps and chopped eggs is prepared for two hours and serves up to four people. Prices are pretty high given the outlying location, but it is also an expensive district of the city.
