Salamanca is an inherently tourist city. Located 200km from the capital of Spain, it is one of the most significant provinces of the Community of Castile and Leon. With its treasured historical monuments like the Catedral Nueva (New Cathedral), the Plaza Mayor (Main Square), the Casa de las Conchas (House of Shells) and the famous Universidad (University), the city streets are the embodiment of pure art.

The same architectural richness, which radiates from the Villamayor stone that gives Salamanca stone its distinctive golden hue, is reflected in some of the city´s most important hotels. These include the Gran Hotel, the Hotel Monterrey and the NH Palacio de Castellanos, all of which are four star and are situated adjacent to the Plaza Mayor.

If you would rather be far from the hustle and bustle, enjoying peaceful surroundings on the city´s outskirts, good choices are the Hotel Regio or the Helmántico Hotel. They both offer an array of comforts and amenities, including swimming pool and tennis courts, in addition to a bus service into the city center so that you don´t have to take the car.

Just a few meters from the Plaza Mayor, Salamanca´s nerve center, and close to the banks of the Tormes River, you will find prestigious hotels like the Rector and San Polo. These hotels have preserved their significant architectural heritage, although the hotel with the most claim to fame in historical terms is the comfortable Parador de Salamanca.

Salamanca has something for everyone, and for all pockets. Hotels such as El Toboso and Las Torres, both two stars, are conveniently situated close to the Plaza Mayor yet offer very reasonable rates. Other options, like the lodging houses Gabriel y Galán and Italia, are also recommended because of their location, amenities and good value.

If you are off on a camping trip, the Salamanca area has several campsites. The largest is Camping Regio, situated just 4km from Salamanca in the grounds of the hotel of the same name. It is a first-class site and is open all year round. Another equally attractive choice, as much for its amenities as for its price, is Camping Ruta de la Plata. It is also open all year round. Naturally, Salamanca has an Albergue Juvenil (Youth Hostel), located right in the city center, offering the most economic option for young people traveling in organized tours.

Make the most of your stay in Salamanca by visiting the whole province, with its historical and natural attractions. Some of the best include Alba de Tormes, a village where the remains of Santa Teresa de Jesús lie; Arribes del Duero, a place that offers incomparable scenery carved out by the Duero River where you can also practice water sports; Ciudad Rodrigo, with its unusual, magnificent historical heritage; the Sierra de Francia, ideal for snow enthusiasts in winter; and Guijuelo, where you can indulge your taste buds with the delicious and justly famous continental sausages and smoked ham.

You can also stay in one of the extraordinary provincial hotels located close to some of these areas. There is the beautiful Doña Teresa, a four-star hotel located in La Alberca; Parador de Ciudad Rodrigo, built above the Castillo de Enrique III (Castle of Henry III) of the 14th century; and the Balneario de Ledesma, a spa where you can relax and take medicinal baths. As you will see, Salamanca has something for everyone.
