One of the largest churches on the island and used for many community activities, the Methodist church was built in 1844. The Methodists arrived later on the island than Anglicans, and had a different approach to many things. For one, they believed that slaves should be educated and went about to train them in English and religion. Today the Methodists are still strong on the island, even though the original planters did not want the slaves to learn to read.
