Where to Stay

The metamorphosis of Leipzig into a wordly and highly urban city explains the recent boom in tourism (and therefore the hotel trade) that now is independent of the trade fair season. Around 1.5 million visitors to Leipzig take advantage of the excellent accommodation in the form of hotels, pensions, holiday homes and youth hostels. Most stay for an average of two days in Leipzig, a city which can described as both historical and modern. Currently, there are no less than 80 different places to choose from, and each jousts for the favour of visitors, offering its own charm and in total around 10,400 beds. There's something for every taste and budget, whether it is exclusive, modern, or modest accommodation you are seeking.

The First Class Seaside Park Hotel, which has acquired an international reputation for quality, lies directly across from the Hauptbahnhof station. The hotel, residing behind a historical façade, has a total of 288 rooms. They are tempered with an art-deco touch, each with bathroom, minibar, television, telephone and other amenities. The Hotel IBIS Leipzig Zentrum is not far from here. It is to be recommended due to its central location. All of its 126 rooms have a bathroom, telephone, cable television and radio. Just around the corner in Goethestraße, you will find the 420-room Novotel Leipzig City. Its 17 apartments are certainly appealing, with two tower-suites and the hotel restaurant Le Jardin.

Not surprisingly, Leipzig also boasts a representative of the Marriot Hotel chain, the Leipzig Marriott Hotel. It is located at Hallisches Tor, and like all the other hotels in the town centre, is easily reached by way of public transport. Its 231 rooms are distributed over six floors and offer all the amenities of a luxury hotel. The several restaurants in the hotel create a distinctly cosmopolitan atmosphere: Allie´s American Grille, Street Life Cafe, and Champions—The American Sports Bar Restaurant.

The Holiday Inn Garden Court (Leipzig City Center) in Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße is situated just a bit further north of these four hotels. It offers rooms designed by London designer Erza Attia. The REMA-Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, with its 67 modern rooms, can be found a few metres further up the same street. The Hotel Inter-Continental Leipzig in Gerberstraße has 447 first-class rooms and suites on 27 floors. A Japanese restaurant and the Cafe Lounge satisfy the palates of its guests, as well as providing a breathtaking view of the city. With its 2,000 square metres of conference and banqueting space, the hotel is an ideal venue for seminars and meetings.

Leipzig's unparalleled "Leading Hotel in the World"—the Kempinski Hotel Fürstenhof - has been synonymous with exclusive hospitality for over 200 years. Located in the Tröndlring, it attracts discriminating guests with its 92 rooms and its Mediterranean bathing facilities. The Renaissance Leipzig Hotel, south of the Seaside Park Hotel on the Großen Brockhaus, boasts 356 rooms. Not far away is the Hotel Mercure Leipzig am Augustusplatz, which merits attention due to its modern rooms and decor.

Other important hotels in the town center are the Hotel-Pension Weißes Roß in Roßstrasse, the Hotel Adagio in Seeburgstraße, the first class Dorint Hotel Leipzig in the Grafisches Viertel and the Hotel Mercure am Gutenbergplatz. The Kosmos Hotel in the bar-filled Gottschedstraße also deserves mentioning.

North of the centre, the district of Wiederitzsch (15 km from the airport, 1.5 km from the A14 motorway) contains a number of first-class hotels. Illustrious names make for a top-tier atmosphere; amongst these are the Astron Hotel Leipzig with its 308 comfortable business rooms near the new trade fair centre, the Hotel im Sachsenpark with a 9-hole golf course and 112 modern rooms in Walter-Köhn-Straße, the Hotel Sachsenstern in Podelwitzer Straße or the Atrium Hotel in Seehausener Straße. Both the Hotel Hiemann and the nearby Hotel Zum Abschlepphof enrich the choice of places to stay in this area.

To the east, the visitor will find a number of predominantly small yet modern hotels, some even rated as exclusive. This area, roughly 1.5 km from the Hauptbahnhof, is known as the district of Neustadt and is home to the Galerie Hotel Leipziger Hof as well as the Artis Suite Hotel and the Treff Hotel Leipzig in Paunsdorff. These establishments fuse traditional and modern elements in an exceptionally tasteful manner.

Not far from Bayrischer Platz to the south are the Hotel Michaelis and the Hotel Markgraf Leipzig. Both lie about a kilometer from the town centre and are closely linked by public transport. Other possibilities in the area include the Leonardo Hotel und Residenz in Windscheidstraße (53 rooms), the Hotel Avantgarde and the Hotel am Bayrischen Platz.

About one kilometre to the west, in the district of Plagwitz, the Hotel Ratskeller attracts guests with its individually designed rooms and informal setting. Other hotels here are the Böhlitz-Ehrenberg Hotel Garni and the Hotel Merseburger Hof. In Leutzsch, 4 km from the center and known for its villas, visitors will find the Hotel Am Auewald and the Lindner Hotel Leipzig.

You should also not forget the many hotels which are located just off the beaten track. Some notable examples include the Hotel Residenz in the district of Taucha; the Hotel Am Kirschberg Garni and Hotel Silencium Garni, to the northwest; the Hotel Am Ratsholz and the Best Western Hotel Windorf to the southwest in the district of Großzschocher; or the Holiday Inn Leipzig Alte Messe, Hotel Berlin, Hotel und Restaurant Völkerschlachtdenkmal and the Parkhotel Diani, all of which are near the Völkerschlachtdenkmal.

Besides the many hotels, there are also a number of pensions, offering an inexpensive alternative. Some important possibilities which significantly increase the choice in the various districts are the Hostel Sleepy Lion in the town centre, the Pension Christin in Kochstraße, the Haus Spangenberg in Mölkau, the Pension Lehdenhof in Albrecht-Dürer-Weg and the Pension Prima in Dresdner Straße 82.

The most simple and inexpensive form of accommodation are most certainly the youth hostels and Gästehäusern (guest houses). Six youth hostels costing EUR 13 for youths and EUR 15 for adults are scattered around the city. Other reasonable alternatives are the campsites on Lake Auensee (Campingplatz Am Auensee) and Lake Kulkwitzer See (Campingplatz Kulkwitzer See).
