Where to Stay

There are approximately 60 choices of accommodation to choose from in Oslo. These range from five-star hotels of the highest international standard to moderate and inexpensive private lodgings approved by the Tourist Office. Most of the choices are in the city centre itself or usually within reasonable walking distance of it. A very cosmopolitan city offering the most exciting nightlife with a multitude of choices, Oslo is also unique in another way; in only 20 minutes by car you are right in the heart of nature itself, with opportunities both in summer and winter to pursue any type of outdoor life. Around small lakes and streams, in these majestic settings of Norwegian landscape, a stay in Lysebu Konferansesenter or the five-star Hotel Rica Holmenkollen Park would be an unforgettable experience. Or maybe rather in the famous Trollvasshytta an inexpensive adventure in either typical Norwegian wooden cabins or rooms. Other options would be Soria Moria Hotel—almost like in fairy-tales—or Voksenåsen Hotel

The main street in Oslo is Karl Johans Gate and it runs from Sentralstasjonen up to The Royal Castle, a pleasant 15-minute walk. Right in between these, the well-known five-star Grand Hotel covers one of the blocks, and just across the road is Hotel Karl Johan both of these facing Stortinget Close by, on one of the side streets, another five-star hotel is Hotel Bristol Close to Sentralstasjonen is the SAS Radisson Plaza, not just another five-star hotel, but also the tallest building in Oslo. Other hotels in the Radisson chain are SAS Radisson Scandinavia and SAS Radisson Park Hotel Another jewel is Hotel Royal Christiania now part of Choice Hotels Scandinavia, located just across from Sentralstasjonen. The only hotel boasting membership of "The Finest Hotels of the World" is Hotel Continental opposite Nationaltheatret KNA Oslo is a member of the Scandic Hotels chain.

Less expensive choices are also found in the city centre, like Tulip Inn Rainbow Hotel Astoria, Rica Victoria Hotel, Cecil Hotel, City Hotel, and the Millennium Hotel. The most typical Norwegian-style architecture is found in Hotel Bondeheimen now part of the Best Western chain. Tulip Inn Rainbow Hotel Spectrum and Tulip Inn Rainbow Hotel Terminus next to Sentralstasjonen are both reasonably priced for their location.

If the suburbs are more appealing to you, most accommodation there is also less expensive. An exception is Linne Hotel 7km from the city centre.

The suburb of Frogner is a fashionable living area and the latest to be added to Rica Hotels is Rica Hotel Bygdøy Alle Frogner Pensjonat ABC B&B Dybwadsgate Pensjonat Hotel White House and Villa Frogner Bed & Breakfast are all inexpensive choices in this area. The famous Vigelandsparken - a must for all visitors - is within walking distance from them all. Apartment-service Oslo Apartments has a good selection of self-contained apartments in this area, where a minimum stay is three nights.

Moving further to the next suburb of Majorstuen, there are moderately-priced places like Comfort Majorstuen Hotel and also the network of private accommodation operated by Majorstuen B&B Majorstuen and Frogner are good places for easy access to the hiking areas of Holmenkollen and Frognerseteren.

In other suburbs further out, there are inexpensive places like Solveig's Inn, Ambiose Bed & Breakfast, and Ekeberg Pensjonat. Another member of Rica Hotels is Rica Helsfyr Hotel close to Munch-museet
