Weather

Situated around 300km (186.4mi) inland of the Baltic Sea, Vilnius' climate verges on the continental. April and May - when the lucky stork returns to his nest and the land and its people open up after winter - convey a real magic. June - midsummer madness month - is equally evocative of Lithuanians' close ties to nature and their pagan past. From May to September, daytime highs are normally between 16°C (60.8°F) and 22°C (71.6°F) and summers can be hot, with days above 30°C (86°F). June to August, the warmest months, are also the wettest, with days of persistent showers. In winter, temperatures are rarely above freezing, days are short and the lakes are permanently frozen.
