Pirkkala is a small municipality of 12,000 inhabitants about 10km south of the Tampere city center. Even though it can be seen almost as a suburb of Tampere, there is still a lot to see and do for the whole family. For one thing, Pirkkala has a very interesting and rich history. People have lived in these parts since the Stone Age, and for those interested in archeology there is lots of interesting information. The former Greater Pirkkala was much larger than the municipality is today; for example the area that today belongs to the city of Tampere used to be a part of Pirkkala. Some of the attractions of Pirkkala are the Luuppi exhibition space with changing art exhibitions, the studio of stone mosaic artist Ritva Luukkonen, the Reippi Museum, the Old Church and of course the new, modern church. There is also Ollila farm in the centre of Pirkkala, whose history goes back to the 1540s. The farm's former main building hosts a Country Shop, which only sells goods that come straight from the producers (farmers and craftsmen). Several festivals are organized in Pirkkala throughout the year. It is worth asking for further details about the exact times of the events at the above number.
