Getting there

There are no trains into San Marino, so you're limited to buses or driving yourself. Depending on the season there are up to nine buses shuttling to Rimini daily. There's also a daily service to Urbino. Both services leave from Piazzale Calcigni (aka Piazalle delle Autocorriere). If you're keen to drive, take the S72 from Rimini's city centre. Park near the funivia (cable car) and catch it into the city centre.

Getting around

Cars are prohibited in the walled area of the city, so exploring it on foot is often the best solution. If you have a car you'll need to park it at one of the numerous car parks in the nearby township of Borgo Maggiore, at the foot of the mountain, and take the 1.5km (1mi) cable car up to San Marino, or leave it at one of the various (and expensive) car parks inside the city limits but outside the walled section.

Visa information

Passport and visa regulations are the same as for Italy.

EU citizens require only a passport or ID card to stay or work in Italy for as long as they like. They are, however, required to register with a questura (police station) if they take up residence and obtain a permesso di soggiorno (permission to remain for a nominated period).

Citizens of many other countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Switzerland and Japan, do not need a visa if entering as tourists for up to three months. Since passports are not stamped on entry, that three-month rule can generally be interpreted with a certain flexibility.
