Split Personality

four stars

Oakland has a split personality. Nouveau-rice neighborhoods hug ghettoes (ie Piedmont/Montclair and the area around MaCarthur Bart, for one), but on the whole, it's a great place to visit and live. Just be careful that you don't stumble into a bad neighborhood (i've had debris thrown at when I accidentally drove down a ghetto neighborhoof off of International Boulevard). Also check out the Piedmont Rose Garden, the Grand Lake Theater, and Cafe Van Kleef downtown.

I love Oaktown!

five stars

San Francisco's sister across the Bay has a scruffy reputation but it is rich in culture, history, and fun ways to spend a day. Take a walk in Lakeside Park, which contains the first bird sanctuary in the United States (in the middle of an urban area, no less!). Check out the California exhibits at the Oakland Museum. Take little children to Fairyland, U.S.A., the theme park that inspired Walt Disney to build his theme park down south. Eat at Bay Wolf, Oliveto's, or any of the other world-class restaurants. Check out the beautiful tiled buildings downtown, as well as the gilded Paramount Theater. Take in a movie on Friday night at the Grand Lake Theater, complete with a concert on the Mighty Wurlitzer. The best Jewish bakery on the West Coast isn't in L.A. -- it's Grand Bakery on Grand Avenue, near the lake. Take a ferry ride to San Francisco, by all means, but take it from Jack London Square. And don't forget to see the magnificent ring of parks in the Oakland Hills.

hidden jewel

four stars

You forgot to mention Lake Merrit (playland for kids, boating, natural history museum, bird sanctuary), the arboretum (small but well done), a great library and black history museum, the planetarium, the zoo (newer and better kept than SF's), the port (both bussiness and tours/sailing/dinning), the symphony, opera, main museum (multiple buildings with a constantly changing show), the hills (hiking, bike, horse riding, archery trails), the Grand Lake theater, shopping in Montclair, and more. There is a 'there' in Oakland if you will just look for it. It is not brazen, but hidden secrets that are the best anyway. ............Z
