Best City in the World for Love and History!

four stars

I live very close to New Orleans (2 hours away) and I like to visit at least once every 4 months or so, so I know a good bit about the city. It is a very eccentric place with lots of exciting history and almost makes you feel like you are in Paris. The food is obviously the best and the nightlife is fun, but be weary of dark streets and don't walk alone if possible. I love the haunted history of the city and there is a tour service that will tour you around some of the haunted spots. The architecture is my absolute favorite. The flowers and gardens in Spring are very inspirational. I can completely understand how easy it is for Anne Rice to find her creativity! Ha! Anyway, great city for singles, young adults, couples, etc., but maybe a little too much for kids under 12.

Wish i was there now!

five stars

My boyfriend and I stayed in a hotel one block from Bourbon St. during our visit last summer. This was perfect because we were close enough to walk for food and entertainment, yet far enough to feel safe, and have a quiet stay. Our hotel was gorgeous, and we had a total blast. We did local sight-seeing during the day, and hit the main street at night. We enjoyed Gthe great local flavor, with the music, food and beverages. A horse drawn carriage is a must for couples, we learned some history on the French quarter, and it was quite romantic. We've been dying to go back since the day we left.

NOLA -- lovin' it!

five stars

I've been a frequent visitor to NOLA for years now. I go back for the food, people, atmosphere, tours... and on and on. There is no limit to the things to do. Each time I visit there is always something new to do. I recommend the swamp eco-tours in Slidell specifically (lots of fun and very informative!! Especially watching that gators swim over for their marshmallow snack!! Who knew?!?) I could go on for days about all of the good things. Bad things? Mainly, the hustlers in the Quarter are the biggest drawback. They are little more than brutes out to steal your money. If you hear one mumble something about your shoes, just keep walking. Also, the stench that emits from Bourbon St. during the day is a big noxious. Walk quickly. In terms of the restaurants to go to/avoid: pick up a copy of the Frommer's Guide. I've found their reviews to be dead-on. And, don't bother with reservations for breakfast at Brennan's... even with them, it's first-come-first-served. I made resv. 4 weeks in advance, showed up at my reserved time, and waited 45-min... got the table right after the people who walked in off the street before me. Infuriating. But, the food made it completely worth it. Unfortunately, though, we had to rush through our meal to make it to our tour on time. I wish that they would handle this better.

A city for the senses

five stars

From someone who has now moved about 1000 miles away, I had no idea how much I'd miss New Orleans. From the museums, to shopping, to the tours, there is always something wonderful to do. This is a city that has a festival for almost everything. The food is a reason enough to come visit. New Orleans is definitely a city of indulgence that one experiences with all the senses from taste(the fabulous food), to hearing(the jazz and blues you'll run into on almost any corner), the smell(the food again!), to all the interesting people, architecture, areas, etc. you'll encounter. Truly a trip for the senses!!

Once is enough.

three stars

If you like the the idea of visiting the Third World without leaving the US you will like New Orleans. The surface is interesting, but crime is out of control, and not all of it reaches the newspapers. There are better deals if you're looking for the exotic.

i was very dissapointed in new orleans. THe French QUarter is ok but ouside of there the city is a total dump! Homeless everywhere, extremely dirty ,stinks, run down buildings everywhere. You can tell this is a very low income city- a total ghetto all over
