Beware of the Paula Dean's hype

one star

We visited Savannah to enjoy its historic sites and advertised Southern cooking. The trip was great disappointment, mainly becuase of our terrible experience in the Lady & Sons and Uncle Buddy's restaurants. The Southern cooking "star" Paula Dean brings a bad name to the city of Savannah that evidently relies so much on the marketing hype around this pseudo-cook lacking the integrity of doing good business. We were greatly surprised to find out that her Lady & Sons restaurant as well as the restaurant of her brother called Uncle Buddy are a real disgrace for the city and for the entire concept of Southern cooking and Southern hospitality. Food was of such poor quality that our whole party stayed up and sick all night after having lunch at Uncle Buddy's and dinner at Lady and Sons. Food was not only sickening greesy but also of frozen and/or canned quality. Dishes were cold and service was disrespectful and unprofessional. The prices were ridiculous - I'm guessing they use the money of the "victims" that are unaware of what's facing them to create the marketing hype and gove commissions to the number of businesses who attract customers to the city through them. Certainly, what customers pay does not reflect the value of the food, service, or atmosphere. Believe me, the experience was terrible. It is a disgrace to Paula Dean to cheat customers out of their money with the naive image of a sweet church going Southern lady - there is nothing Southern in the food, hospitality, or integrity of her establishments. Sickening!

WONDERFUL PLACE

four stars

I was in Savannah in the spring of 2003. It is a very beautiful city. I was also in Charleston, S.C. that year. I must admit that my stay in Charleston was just wonderful. I liked it better than Savannah, GA.

good food and fun times

five stars

i lived in savannah from 1995 to 1999 while i attended the savannah college of art and design. i loved the feel of the city, it is artistic and full of history. when i lived there, however, it was dangerous in some areas and mostly at night. i haven't been back in a few years, hopefully it has changed. the restaurants are great. the lady and sons in city market has a fabulous lunch buffet. the north beach grille on tybee is great. 321 cafe on habersham st (troupe square) is good for brunch. and toucan cafe on the southside, i believe it's on eisenhour or around there, had the best salmon sandwich. if you like art, the gallery espresso had some excellent student and faculty shows and a good cup of coffee. river street is a big tourist spot, it is cool, but touristy. there is so much to do in savannah and tybee. whatever you do will be fun and unlike any other vacation you could take.

Relaxing Savannah-History Galore.

five stars

The history of the area-the architecture and fact that the place is just old. Some of the areas close to the historic district are not in the best repair but if one takes time to talk with the people who are native to the area it is a fascinating. Lots of other areas to visit very close. Tybee Island for one. If into military history see the "Mighty 8th Air Force Museum" just out of town. Excellent seafood.

A Yankee's Opinion

five stars

I was only there for a weekend, checking out SCAD, but from Forsythe (sp?) Park to the Riverwalk, Historic Savannah really struck me as having a near perfect balance of neighborhood feel mixed with a Southern sophistication. While a Southern city, there seemed to be enough expatriots from the North to give the city a nice feel; not too much of one or the other. The other thing is that people really seemed proud of the area. As I was looking at Savannah to possibly relocate, that resonated with me.

won't go again

three stars

Had to pay for parking everywhere(meters).Got a 2 day parking pass, but checked out 1 1/2 hrs after pass expired and got a ticket. Everything is expensive, a real money pit. It's strictly for history buffs, got bored, you can do only so many tours. not relaxing. If you go stay as close to River St. as possible, that's where all the good eating places are, and things to do. Parking is so scarce, once you get a spot, leave it there and walk the whole time. The trolley tour was good. The River Street Oyter Bar is the best place to eat seafood!! The Lady & Sons is good, expect a 2 hr wait. We won't go again. Tybee Island is real nice though. Ft. Pulaski is worth the trip too.

Haunted Tours

five stars

I really enjoyed my trip to Savannah. Spent time on the river fromt but is one area to use caution in late at night. Took in a haunted ghost walk at sundown. It was really amazing and gave a lot of interesting stories and history of the area. Several stops in the tour included Colonial Park Cemetary, Keyhole House (hotel), Marshall House(hotel), 1790 (hotel)and several private homes with history. The whole tour took place in the historic district and took about and hour and one half to complete. Since the tour is done at night one thing to consider is going back during daylight time and redoing the area again, on your own. As this added a whole new experience and also allowed for more picture taking.
