The city seems to be divided between the rich and the poor, but city life is great! There's tons of things to do, tons of places to eat, and great malls. There's the beaches and of course, the best place to be for city life is Miami Beach. Downtown Miami is getting better, but it's not there yet. Don't visit it now... visit it in a few more years although Bayside Marketplace is a fun place to be (and so is Coconut Grove). For romance, I would suggest Coral Gables (parks, luxury) or Coconut Grove (funky uniqueness) or even upper Miami Beach (tamer version of South Beach and less congested) or go to nearby Fort Lauderdale -- Las Olas is romantic over there (i believe you could take a water taxi to there from South Beach). To hang out in Miami Proper, you'll need to be street smart and have a car. There's cute bakeries in Doral (try Bella Vista), Little Havana (Versailles), South Miami (lots of cafes around here), Miami Beach (try Panna Cafe and other cafes here) that I've visited and they do NOT serve cakes. They serve food at cheap prices and they usually have good cafe con leche (coffee with milk). Fresh orange juice isn't hard to find -- check out a small but famous latin-style marketplace Palacio de los Jugos. You'll have to be daring to go inside that, but once you do and try something, you won't regret it. After doing this, you would love the latin Miami.
