as a 12 year resident, i think the 2 most overlooked things about denver are A: it's large mexican population B: it is flat, and not in the mountains, but 15 minutes away. the high plains are a unique climate compared to sea level, and not for everyone. violent thunderstorms w/ numerous funnel clouds are the norm from mid-may to july, and are very exciting. hail occurs often, and is sometimes large and dangerous. winters are cold but regular 60+ degree days occur throughout the cold season, providing frequent relief. denver doesn't strike me as a terribly educated city, though stats will say otherwise. racial tension occurs between hispanics & whites, but is not a serious issue. several sections of town are full-on mexican, which results in many tasty places to eat at a reasonable price. access to the rockies is great and easy, and boulder is 20 minutes NW of town. the nearest similarly sized city is over 500 miles away, giving a feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. altitude sickness is over-hyped. a good city to move to if you're young and looking for a change - easy to score a job and apartment for reasonable prices. 5-9 hundred bucks a month for something cool and centrally located. probably the only city with a large amusement park with rollercoasters, etc. right downtown.
