Cheesy?

five stars

I am not sure how this guy thought it was "Cheesy", San Francisco will always be one of my favorite places on the planet. It has homeless, and its people are very diverse, not all are nice, or they may not seem nice if you don't understand them, there is not one dominant culture in San Francisco, and every neighborhood is different and distinct. Be sure to experience many, not just downtown, and you have to see some of the greater Bay Area, especially just north of the city. There is a lot too see, but you have to know where to look, don't just see the Golden Gate Bridge or the the waterfront those are obvious tourist traps and also where all the bums go to collect money, the city isn't about landmarks. I lived there a while ago, and I still miss it sometimes, my only advice is NOT to tell them you are from Southern California.

Great for: Hiking/Camping, History/Culture, Theatre/Music, Nightlife, Family Holidays

Lovely city, can't wait to return

five stars

Amazing place, the streets are so steep you can't believe your eyes. Helicopter flight we took in San Francisco was the best we have ever had, if you get the chance do it.

Great vacation city anytime of year

five stars

San Francisco offers so much variety to travelers - fabulous architecture, interesting and diverse city neighborhoods, amazing views of the bay and surrounding ocean/mountains. Don't miss day trips to Alcatraz island and Sausalito. If you are planning on being there for more than a week, check out the Marin Headlands, Stinson Beach and Muir Woods to the North. In Winter, there's world-class skiing at Lake Tahoe - about 4 hours drive from San Francisco.

I left my heart in San Fransisco

five stars

We only spent 3 days in San Fransisco before we set off on a long jaunt across California, we loved every minute it is so laid back and relaxing we said we should have made it our last stop. I don't think there was anything we did not like, it was our first trip to the states and we were overawed by the welcome we received

Fantastic !

four stars

SF was brilliant ! Especially good was hiring a bike and cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge and going to Sausalito. The Fisherman's Wharf area is beatiful with seafood restaurants a plenty in addition to many others. The trip to Alcatraz is well worthwhile but a bit of advice ... book tickets over the internet before you go to avoid huge queues on the day ! The Street Cars are good value but extremely busy so consider other modes of transport also to get around. I would definitely go back it was just the best !!!!!!!!!!!

Great for: History/Culture

See it and never forget it

five stars

I don't have much to say but: This city is amazing, I've only been ther once for a view days, but I got hooked. It's been now over 3 years since I've been there, but I still can't forget it. It would be a place I would move to without any hesitation. Gimme a job there and I 'd start tomorrow. This city really takes you in and doesn't let you go anymore. The atmosphere, the people, everything is so easy and friendly. There's is so much to see and do. I think you could life there for a year and still find something new everyday. I can only urge everyone to go there, believe me you'll never forget it.

Breathtaking views.

five stars

San Francisco is so gorgeous. If you do your research, there are restaurants in every price range. Check the internet, there are sites for restaurant reviews done by locals. There are cultural events or 10K races, every week. Observe the city from the top of Twin Peaks; the panorama is unbeliveable. Visit Treasure Island, while there is not too much going on there, take a lunch and take in the bay and SF skyline. Of course, visit Chinatown just so you can say you did, but drive a bit to Clement Street, less touristy and good, inexpensive food. Drive down Lombard Street the crookedest street in the world. For some great ice cream, forego the cliched Ghiradelli's and try Mitchell's IceCream on San Jose in the Mission District. They make the IceCream on site and it is sooo creamy. Beware of driving there, not for the weak of heart, too many one way streets and a lot of streets "veer" and on some streets it looks like cars are coming straight toward you. The public transportation is great and you can get just about anywhere. Visit SBC Park, a beautiful ballpark; I would even venture to say romantic - if there could be such a thing - great food with awide selection for all tastes, albeit, very expensive. Beware of the large population of homeless, (don't let them guilt you into giving them money, I saw a guy that I just gave a dollar to counting his bootie, he had a wad a dough)very disheartening and for such a great city there is a lot of litter and graffitti. The streets need a lot of work, so many potholes. For a big city(especially one in California) there is a lot of park land. Golden Gate park is lovely, there are museums and a conservatory to visit. A lot of the museums have free days; the conservatory is free the first Tuesday of the month, as is the SFMOMA, the Legion of Honor is free every Tuesday. Someplaces offer discounts with a bus pass or transfer. Do some homework and you don't have to break the bank, but if you want to spend some bucks, there is a lot of opportunity to do just that. Something for everyone. P.S. It can be COLD in the summer, prepare to dress in layers.

Great for: Hiking/Camping, History/Culture, Nightlife

You can live here forever

What a nice city. And what ramps does it have ! . I have been in SF four times and I gotta say I like it as much as I like New York. I could not say which one is better.

City by the Bay

five stars

I've lived all around -- Central Valley, SoCal, even the Hudson Valley of New York. But no place is as special as San Francisco. No other big city can compare to the cleanliness, safety, charm, and excitement of SF. The only drawback is the ridiculously high prices of dining, and traffic! But regardless of what you like to do (outdoorsy, nightlife, concerts, shopping, wine tasting, tourist attractions)... SF has it all.
