i recently took my first trip to los angeles over the christmas holidays and to be honest was extremely excited to finally see lala land. But from the moment we got to LAX we suddenly felt unsafe, the airport atmosphere was chaotic at best, finding a cab was easy but trusting cab drivers that looked like they just came out of jail was a different story. I don't want to sound picky or snotty but the cab driver you pick you have to trust will take you to the place you need to go and being unfamiliar with the city it can be quite nerve-racking. My best suggestion is to rent a car(no car for a tourist in LA is NOT an option) trust me, we thought we could handle taking public transportation and walking because we both didn't mind it and were used to it. LA's metro system is probably one of the worst of any city i've gone to(and i've been in lots)bus routes are not the best designed and can take hours to get to your destination even if its only a few miles away. If you've heard not to be in downtown LA at night, daytime is not any better. Bums and crackheads pollute the streets of downtown LA 24 hours so be careful. There were some places that are must see's like beverly hills, robertson blvd, universal city, santa monica, malibu, newport beach and cabazon outlet mall in cabazon,ca about an hour drive east of downtown LA if traffic is fair. But when you are driving be extremely careful LA drivers are lunatics; tailgating, honking, cutting others off, switching lanes dangerously are not uncommon and is the way of life in FABOLOUS(NOT!!!) LA.
