Los Angeles is an exciting city which I find very good for partying and shopping. Los Angelinos(?) are not intellectuals but there is something fun and carefree about them. Of course there are the aggressive, competitive characters but most tend to be laid back and enjoying the great weather they have. The metro buses are usable, although having a car makes moving around town much less complicated. Finding parking can be a hassle sometimes but if you're willing to pay the money, there is almost always somewhere close to park your car. As for safety issues, I did not find that to be a problem at all. Of course stay away from certain areas near downtown LA at night, but every city has "those places." I really enjoyed visiting the Santa Monica and West Hollywood areas. Westwood village, where you find UCLA, is a great place to visit if you have the extra time. They have many interesting restaurants and UCLA students seem to enjoy living there very much.

(Report Problem)i recently took my first trip to los angeles over the christmas holidays and to be honest was extremely excited to finally see lala land. But from the moment we got to LAX we suddenly felt unsafe, the airport atmosphere was chaotic at best, finding a cab was easy but trusting cab drivers that looked like they just came out of jail was a different story. I don't want to sound picky or snotty but the cab driver you pick you have to trust will take you to the place you need to go and being unfamiliar with the city it can be quite nerve-racking. My best suggestion is to rent a car(no car for a tourist in LA is NOT an option) trust me, we thought we could handle taking public transportation and walking because we both didn't mind it and were used to it. LA's metro system is probably one of the worst of any city i've gone to(and i've been in lots)bus routes are not the best designed and can take hours to get to your destination even if its only a few miles away. If you've heard not to be in downtown LA at night, daytime is not any better. Bums and crackheads pollute the streets of downtown LA 24 hours so be careful. There were some places that are must see's like beverly hills, robertson blvd, universal city, santa monica, malibu, newport beach and cabazon outlet mall in cabazon,ca about an hour drive east of downtown LA if traffic is fair. But when you are driving be extremely careful LA drivers are lunatics; tailgating, honking, cutting others off, switching lanes dangerously are not uncommon and is the way of life in FABOLOUS(NOT!!!) LA.
