Mexico City is great for a vacation as long as a beach is not important. The world-class Anthropological Museum is worth a day's visit. Other museums not to miss: the eclectic Franz Mayer, the National Palace with its large Diego Rivera mural, the Museum of Diego Rivera (which also includes some Frida Kahlo paintings), the Templo Mayor and Museum with its Aztec treasures, the local favorite Museum of Mexico City. Learn about the culture at the Palace of Fine Arts, with its great programs, Cuilcuilco Pyramid near the University, even the somewhat touristy Plaza Garibaldi for mariachis. You can eat at a high-end restaurant (L'Albufera in the Gran Melia Reforma Hotel), an historic building where locals flock as well as tourists, Cafe de Tacuba; you can have excellent Argentinian at Estancia del Gaucho near the Revolution monument. Day trips to Puebla and Cholula, Xochimilco for the floating gardens and boat ride and Teotiuachan for the Pyramids. Mexico City has something for everyone.
