So much to see in a small distance. Every castle and palace is great. If you can, wander a little outside the city and visit Warwick Castle, and Blenheim Palace. The bus tours really are a must for your first day - they help orient you, and give you a chance to see EVERYTHING quickly. The London Eye is fun for the first day too. Don't expect much of the food. It's dismal. Try to save money on food (goodluck), because expensive isn't better, and everything is expensive. Don't bother with a rental car. Parking is EXPENSIVE and public transportation is easy to use. Driving is crazy, not because it's on the wrong side of the street, but because traffic in London is horrid. Only get a car if you'll be driving in the country to see more sites.
