Look for the real London

five stars

London is the most fantastic city but it does not give visitors an accurate experience of traditional life in England. If you want to pay a traditional visit to London, forget trying to find this in the west end or around the main tourist attractions! Head instead for the riverside pubs of Wapping and Limehouse for some real history and traditional ale houses. Visit a pie and mash shop in Greenwich for traditional East end food, eels are optional! And if you want a roast dinner don't expect to find a good one in the west end! Visit the East end markets and note the street names and the old buildings in Spitalfields, walk through the city of London in the finance district and find quality shops down little lanes. London is not cheap, but don't pay the inflated prices for food that the French would never put up with! Check out online guides where eateries are graded by the clients. There are many treasures all over London, many of the best just a little away from the centre : greenwich park, blackheath, dulwich, the riverside. Enjoy!

Luminant London

four stars

London is a large ciy, fille with mnay differnt ethnic varities. I found moblilty very easy in the city because of transportion. I felt relatively safe there considering it being a mega town and all. The palaces are absouletly breathtaking and the whole area is like stepping into a history book. I enjoyed my stay here.

I (heart) London

five stars

The people in London are very accepting of different lifestyles, which is an unknown characteristic to me being from Texas and all. I took a Jack the Ripper tour which was fun, the beefeaters at the Tower of London all had great stories. There was so much to see and learn about the long and very interesting history of London. Westminster has so many well-known people buried there, it was wonderful. Just everything about London was so great, I'm actually considering moving there.

you are what you eat

three stars

For the most part the food is toxic. Surprised so many of the reviews don't mention anything about the poor quality. Best bet is to stick with non-British cuisine, especially Indian. Store hours stink for a big city, prices are high. Public transportation is great though, and there is a lot of history. Could take weeks exploring the city.

London Rocks!

five stars

London is a great city to visit...and everything is just a train ride away! I mean everything...the British Museum, the Tower, the Palace, the Abbey...Although the food wasn't the best, the pubs and ethnic foods were the best choices...I mean really, a tandoori chicken cornish pasty? Yum! And how about lunch in a crypt underneath a church...priceless!

London is the perfect vacation spot!

five stars

London is amazing. I visited for the first time in September 2003. The weather was incredible. There was so much to see and do. I had five days there and it wasn't nearly enough time. The Tube (rail system) is extremely easy to navigate. Save money by purchasing a multi-day pass in advance. Most of the city seems very safe, even at night. Restaurants were very good as long as you stay away from the American-ized fast food traps near major tourist spots. English pubs are very friendly and often have the best "English" fare and very reasonable prices. Many restaurants have price fixe menus, which include a two or three course meal at a reasonable price. I recommend August/September for a London vacation because the Queen is on holiday during that time each year. It is the only time of the year Buckingham Palace is opened to tourists. Buckingham Palace tour is one of the best I found. With the dollar weak against the pound, it is not an inexpensive place to visit. Americans should be aware that hotel rooms tend to be very small and typically have two twin or one full sized bed. King and Queen sized beds are rare (even in four-star hotels). That said, I still think London is one of the finest vacations available. To top it off, sail back to the U.S. from Southampton on a Cunard liner for the ultimate relaxation and no jet lag.
