Interesting, but don't take the kids.

three stars

We travelled there with our three daughters. It is a very beautiful town and the museums are great. But with the exchange rate as it is, we found it very expensive. Some museums were closed for refurbishment, but the views of the canals and hi-lights such as the Anne Frank House and the Artis Zoo (an old-fashioned place with a great array of animals kept in somewhat cramped conditions) are very memorable. The food is awful unless you want to spend a great deal of money and there is a cynical attitude to tourists that is very out of date (e.g. tapas marinaded pork was one slice of fried bacon on 1/2 a bread roll). We stayed in the serviceable but expensive Singel Hotel which was okay but its close proximity to a red light area made going out with the children awkward and there really was nothing charming or liberated about hurrying past the ladies in the windows. The same is true of the legal dope selling 'coffee houses'. The whole bicycle thing is interesting. It is almost, but not quite, the eco-city of the future. Some cyclists are quite anarchic and we spent a fair bit of time dodging pavement mounted bad-tempered riders. Overall verdict was we were glad we'd been but wouldn't go again as it feels over priced, out of date and sleazy - not the cutting edge hip family friendly town it's sold as.

Limit your stay to the weekend only...

three stars

Nice place for a short visit - two days at the most - any longer and you begin to notice just how seedy and grubby the place actually is. Word of advice - stick to the main tourist areas.

My town!!

five stars

I was born in Amsterdam, raised in Amsterdam and only 2 years living in LA gave me a view of what is really a hell on earth. For me my hometown is the most exciting, warm, happy an friendly place in the whole wide world. Here you can feel free, here you can dream and here are the most romantic places. Be welcome in my town and feel what life's about! ps, i'm so lucky to live in the heart of the canal district, very near the Anne Frank house and the "Westertoren), Mandy

Amsterdam where you can be yourself

five stars

I loved amsterdam, the atmosphere was awesum, you can be yourself with out people looking down on you, The people are fun, i loved the bars with the wacky bacca in use. The red light is well worth a vist and the sex shops which is so much part of amsterdam, if you go tongue in cheek you will have a right laugh at the stuff they sell, just be a little careful and stick to the tourist part. A ride on the many cannels is a must, they point out the places of interest so you can get a feel and have a rough idea where they are so you can visit on foot. Overall a very nice place to vist for a long weekend to chill out and have fun. once done explore the rest of Holland as that as a lot to offer too.

Funny Amsterdam ipod tour

four stars

Was in Amsterdam last weekend. I took one of those ipod tours. What a laugh I had. The tour talked about where to go out, bar life in Amsterdam, some black humour, and a little culture and history. The tour was pretty cheap too, you can get it at www.audiocitytours.com

Great for a girls weekend !!

five stars

Have been lucky enough to go to amsterdam several times, last visit in January. Fantastic feel and atmosphere, just a really chilled out place to be. I can't help going back time and time again, beautiful architecture, good shopping, a great selection of coffee shops, cafes and restaurants, aswell as some fantastic clubs. Amsterdam is a vibrant, colourful city and somewhere that everyone should visit at least once; you might be suprised! The next girls weekend in Amsterdam is planned for August, and I know that we will have the most fantastic weekend and start planning the next one straight away!

I just can't get enough!

five stars

I went for the first time in May 2005, had a perforated appendix and was treated very well by everyone. I went back in September, sitting outside for all my meals, painting, people watching. The nighlife is brilliant in many areas, Rembrantplein, Leidesplein etc. The museums, canal trips and other places of interest are very good. The Dutch people are very helpful and friendly, a lovely laid back people, always ready for a celebration at the slightest excuse. My first choice for a weekend or a longer break. I just can't get enough!
