I haven't even left yet but the guy who wrote the review before me is right. This year Amsterdam is the place to be, take it from me I heard about the party all the way in cleveland ohio. Now a group of about 20 people are going to fly out there to party from the U.S.

(Report Problem)Sorry, just have to say it, OVER-RATED!!!! Am i the only one who found this place a squalid dump? You expect a bit of sleaze with the red light district etc, that's fine, but just I thought Britain was untidy but Amsterdam takes the biscuit! Ok, so I'm not a dope smokin backpacker, I prefer the delights of Mrs Artois and her daughter Stella but I still expected to be taken in by this palce. Went to Amsterdam on a whim just expecting this vibrant, cosmopolitan forward thinking city, and found Blackpool without the sea! If your idea of fun is being hassled by pimps and dealers go for it! Was it because I went on a Monday and nothing was open til lunchtime? Was it because I went on a Monday and everyone who served me in a shop or a bar was as arrogant as they possibly could be! I travel a lot and know service can vary greatly, but c'mon, 10 out of 10 for cold shoulders!! Two highlights about my trip to Amsterdam 1) Satekroket machines!! 2) The ferry home!! Sorry, but give me London any time!!

(Report Problem)Amsterdam; it can be said, without doubt, that the best part of our stay in Amsterdam was that spent in the Airport, waiting for the next plane out - which we chose to move forward. The city is a meeting place for the world's drug addicts, sexual perverts and alcoholics. Each night it was possible to sit down at any given bench, not to watch boats travel slowly by the walled embankments of the canals, but to watch strangers stumbling back and forth spewing abuse at their invisible friends. The drugs, reputed to be the very essence of the place, were not up to scratch, the alcohol was expensive - the industry fuled only by angry englishmen and the red light district... should have been turned off. The atmosphere was tacky at best, convenience was restricted to the trains, the 'service' we recieved was reminiscent of the condescending tones that parents reserve for naughty children and as for value, M&Ms for 5.5 euros says it all. We would never go back here again and would advise that with the rest of Europe to choose from, why settle for less?

(Report Problem)We stayed at the Jolly Carlton Hotel which was just near the floating flower market. The hotel was 4* but would probably rate it 3* in England but clean, comfortable and tidy with friendly staff. The city is very clean and pleasant to walk around. The transport system is the best trams, bikes and canal buses being very popular to travel on. We walked most places though but did by a canal bus ticket which was fairly expensive but worth it as we spent nearly a full day just going up and down the different canals as they offer a different perspective on the city and you can take it on at your own pace rather than getting caught up in the pace of other tourists. The city has become extremely commercialised. The squares are much like Spain, in respect of the bars, like Irish bars etc. Not at all like Paris where they have not embraced the tourist but expected the tourist to embrace their city, which I personally preferred. The Red Light District is not at all what you would expect. Unless you go down the smaller side streets then perhaps this is where it all happens but as I was with my partner we did not do this we just stuck to the main streets where tourists were walking even with younger children in some groups so that shows how tame it actually is for some. There is a lot of pick pocketing signs so be careful with your money. Even though we were not a victim of this crime I can imagine it is quite common as at the busy markets there are a lot of people just pushing past you. Money - The exchange rate is ok for the UK and exchanging your £ to Euros in the UK is great too and free, but in Amsterdam the commission was around 8% which is 1% too much for me so we just drew money from the cash points I would suggest you do the same if your bank offers you this service for free like ours as it is rare for shops, bars etc to credit cards be it Visa or MasterCard etc, they like their cash only system it would seem. Also beware of early flights as check in times for hotels are 2pm like most but flights to Amsterdam tend to be early morning arrivals for connections. I would definitely recommend you visit Amsterdam as it is a nice place.
