The weekend I spent in Venice - was very crowded - and to get anywhere you didn't just have to wait in line, you had to push and shove!

(Report Problem)This is an awesome place to visit, best to take pictures in Black and White film. So if you get the chance to go, you won't regret it.

(Report Problem)Venice is of my favorite cities in Italy. I know it can be a tourist trap, but I love the beauty and the sea. San Marco Sqaure is absolutely mangificent in the early morning, although it may be completely packed with tourist as early as 9:00 or 10:00 am. The Campanile, the tallest structure in Venice, gives you a beautiful birds eye view of the city. Maps of the cities are worthless. They really can't get you anywhere. I just follow the crowd to where I need to go. It is so much easier. There are also signs on the walls that point you to the Rialto or wherever you need to go. In addition, the vaporettos get so crowded that I just walk to my next destination. My biggest mistake while I was in Venice was underestimating the weather in the afternoon. I went in September, and although it may be clear and sunny in the morning, the weather may change dramatically in the afternoon with heavy rains. I was caught twice in a heavy rainstorm in San Marco without an umbrella or rainjacket. Never again will I be unprepared. If you will be in Venice for more than 2 or 3 days, try doing a day trip to Padua. It is a beautiful little city that houses the Cappella degli Scrovegni which contains the frescos of Giotto. Truly magnificent piece of work. Not to be missed is the Basilica of St. Anthony and the Abbey fo St. Justin.

(Report Problem)I always heard Venice is a nice place to go, but it was beyond all of my expectations. Always figured there would be some weird smell because of the tide rising and falling, but there isn't. The canals are beautiful at night with all of the buildings' lamps reflecting in the water. The atmosphere is so old and romantic. There is hardly a down side that I can think of. San Marco Square flooded a couple of feet deep while I was there, but the city quickly puts up platforms over the water to get to all of the buildings.

(Report Problem)How anyone could give Venice less than a five star rating is beyond comprehension. Is there any other city in the world that one could even compare to Venice? The fact that you can traverse the entire city and not run into or hear a single automobile is enough reason for a city. This is a city that is stunning in its decay, like a grand dowager in her finest regalia, knowing that while her youth is gone, she is still the center of everyone's attraction. I remember being on a boat from the airport heading into the Grand Canal on my fifth visit to the city and wondering what in the world I was going to see or do that I had not already done in this compact city before. I stepped out of my hotel, having no clue whether to go left or right, and really in search of nothing in particular, and within five minutes, I was swept up and totally lost in the quiet elegance of the city. That's what Venice does to you. Hotels are not inexpensive, but if you look hard enough, you can find something that you will like. I have never had a bad meal there, and the people are wonderful. I find that being American, the Europeans that are friendliest to me tend to be the Irish and the Italians, perhaps because everyone has a relative back in the US. Venice is a true walking city, with every neighborhood offering its share of charm and surprises. And who can deny, that standing on a bridge on a Venice backwater as the sunset reflects the colors of the stuccoed buildings off the canals, that this has to be the most romantic city in the world. Propose to your sweetheart in Paris, but honeymoon in Venice.

(Report Problem)As you arrive to venice by train it is a magical first view, the city that appears out of the lagoon, and then you disembark and the adventure begins. In the spring this may be the ideal place for travel, before the tourists over run the city, so that it becomes impossible to go anywhere, but after the cold has lifted a little. The artistry prevalent at every turn of the canal, and the glass blowing off on the islands makes it a very energetic, beautiful place to be, except that this becomes a way to make capital off of unsuspecting tourists and there you are admiring a fake something made in China. The beauty is not lost because of this though, and discovering the truth in the beauty of Venice is its most appealing aspect.

(Report Problem)Arriving at Venice on a crossing from Lido di Jesolo I was wholly unprepared for the sight about to unfold - stepping into Piazza San Marco with its' literally breath-taking architecture gave me the same emotional rush as when you're beginning the descent of a rollercoaster. It is impossible not to fall in love with this 'city', it is utterly charming in the truest sense of the word. I like to think of Venice as an ageing gentleman who has seen through the splender and frivolity of youth but is so dear and charming at heart that you cannot help but adore every wrinkle on his brow.

(Report Problem)I got to enjoy the beauty of Venice this summer on an amazing Europe tour I did. Personally, I don't have enough words to describe Venice. It truly is a remarkable place. It's just so different than anything you can imagine. No cars at all is a VERY nice thing to invite an altogether different experience than Americans are used to. A good bottle of wine at a true Italian restaurant is worth every nickel. Well, I tried cuttlefish once while there which is a fish that has ink like an octopus. They cook the fish in the ink so the meal is black as tar. VERY odd in appearance. Anyhow, go to Venice!
