Overall
Rome must have run out of money. The streets are pot-holed, the buildings are filthy. Cars and scooters dominate everywhere - roads, pavements, squares, making walking awful. It is outrageously expensive for what you get. The historical sites are not looked after. Even the area immediately around St Peters is scruffy. We have been to no other European city anything like Rome. Look at of the window on the airport train; what you see is what you are going to get!
