We’re just back from a 4-day trip to Rome and it’s fantastic! I lived in northern Italy for four years and was so busy working that I never got to see Rome … but made up for it now – the old Rome is astonishing; the view from the top of St Peter’s was unforgettable, great food, friendly people. Just one thing: watch out for daylight robbery of the foreign exchanges. I got ‘fregato’ at the main Termini Station where they charged a fixed rate of 3.90 Euros plus a commission of 17.9% (yes nearly eighteen percent!) for changing UK pounds into Euros. And that’s despite me protesting and trying to get my money back in fluent Italian!! My advice is to check the official exchange rate and do your calculations beforehand, making sure that you only pay 1.5-2% extra before handing over your money. Alternatively check the rates using your credit or debit card. You can buy a nice pizza or two with the money that you will be saving.
