History you can touch, you can see the evolution of people very easily there, the religious presents of history everyone should experience, it might make this world a better place, you can really understand who we are when in Rome. Unfortunately the city is the prepare the roads are literally moving under you, the ground is so unstable at this time roads are in constant motion. First thing you notice is all of the graffiti it is everywhere, unfortunately some of it looks like it's been there since the forties or fifties. When I was there is a major push to clean up the city and restore its beauty, unfortunately today all you see his pollution and crumbling stucco. I have traveled all over the world I had never seen people so stressed out, to the point that their mean to each other, and for the tourist they will try to con you into anything even in it's not their business. If it wasn't for the stressed and although walking Italians would be all 400 pounds or better they eat like pigs. You better like olive oil as they even for it on olive oil, they even tried to mimic the French by using lots of butter. I had some wonderful mozzarella there, but strawberries and other fruits are not near US quality. The restaurant owners would come up to you and tell you isn't this just great when it was no better than buying a sandwich in a Circle K at four o'clock in the morning. Price of food was high and low quality sometimes even tasteless I don't understand how anybody could say it's the best in the world obviously they drank too much wine. For an example we had dinner and party reservations for New Year's the cost was €400 a person so it was €1200 for the three of us to us don't drink alcohol at all point is we all got food poisoning you think at those prices they would have got it right. To some this expect a wonderful experience for history and a bad experience in social behavior and food quality.

(Report Problem)I adore this city - it is too unique to be compared to the cliche Paris or the drab London....

(Report Problem)I lived in Rome for 5 years with my husband's job before having to transfer out and absolutely LOVED it! It's got history, beauty, language, food, culture and the people. I broke down Rome for our visitors in three days--one day for the Vatican, another for Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona and last for the Colosseum and Roman Forum and the "baths". Each tourist site is within walking distance of the next. Mopeds are all over, the traffic is crazy so for a real adventure rent a car there's always plenty of parking underground at the Villa Borghese Park with a pedestrian walk bringing one just on top of Via Veneto and that also leads to the Spanish Steps. Buy yourself something special--you save on import expenses in the U.S. plus receive the 20% IVA discount. The people are so willing to practice their English. My favorite was the sights at night. Other than the gypsies who can be quite clever and inventive in pick-pocketing (even they are not violent), I never ever felt threatened. August is the quietest time to go when most Italians leave the city for the month but it is quite hot then too. Both financially and securely the best way is using your ATM/Debit card where you'll receive the best exchange rate. Hope you found this helpful.

(Report Problem)Seeing that I was there on business, I had way more fun than I was entitled to. First off, be aware that Rome is ancient but it is very much a large tourist city. Expect the negatives that are associated with this including high costs, crime, traffic, and panhandling. The population in tourist areas during the day is very diverse. There is some great food and entertainment if you check around. I also recommend the outdoor cafes on the mall/park if you have a chance. This place is so cool. The young people there are very fashion concious and a pleasure to watch. Be careful crossing the streets in town. Drivers will stop, but not in a fashion that most people in the USA are used to (note that I said "most"). Make eye contact. There is simply no way to describe the architecture that would do it justice. Simply breath taking from ruins to the cathedral. Beautiful!

(Report Problem)We travelled with a tour group in 2000. Except for the city's rerouting of bus lines due to the Year of Jubilee, we had no difficulty using Rome's excellent public transportation. Caution; St. Peter's Cathedral is closed on Wednesdays if the weather's nice and the Pope is having an audience outside in the Piazza! We couldn't get into the church until the next day... fortunately we *had* another day. Also, St. Peter's Piazza is the worst place for pickpocketers. Get a good guide book, like Frommer's or the DK book about Rome. Take the walking tours and side trips like down the Via Appia to the Catecombs (VERY worth it). Every church is worth looking into for the art inside. Every fountain worth drinking from. There's layer upon layer of history and drama. Plan to give Roma all the time you can possibly give her, and take lots of pictures.

(Report Problem)I went to Rome May of 2004 and it honestly is the most amazing city. Very romantic, charming and so beautiful. The people there were very nice and willing to help you with anything. The architecture is unlike anything i've ever seen. As for the food, it is so good, not like american italian, it's something you have to try to understand. I would recomend this city for any vacation or a honeymoon!
