nice place, is a must visit city

three stars

Rome is a must visit city, rich of history and lot of nice foods. But one night, I was on my way to termini station by bus. And several people keep pushing me out of the bus and another group of people keep pushing my girlfriend into the bus. And I was outside the bus and my girlfriend was inside the bus AND THE BUS LEFT!!!!! Therefore, I instantly noticed that something lost in my pocket. My camera, my cards, my money and MY MOBILE PHONE and thus I have no way to contact my girlfriend. I was helpless that time, what I can do is to take the bus to the station and look for my girlfriend and luckily she was in the station waiting for me. Then, we decided to make a police report in termini station (just a room), but the door was locked and there is a police inside and IGNORING US!!!!! We were trying to communicate and lastly we found someone who is willing to translate to the police and ask him to open the door and let us make a police report. And the polic report in this country is weird, fill up a form BY YOURSELF and go. THIS IS VERY TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE FOR ME IN ROME. Rome is actually the perfect city to visit, but one thing to concern is just the pick pockets. And there is not only one who is trying to steal your money but a group of people. Therefore, this is kinda hard to avoid and what I suggest to do is not to bring so much of money out and avoid bringing any important things such as passport, ID card.

Bella Roma!

five stars

Just got back after a 4 night stay - exhausted! We used the open top 110 tourist bus (13 euros). You can hop on and off it all day, as many times as you like. Starts off at the main termini (train and bus terminus) tours all the major areas to visit. Wonderful places to see during the day and at night, when the lighting of monuments and statues is amazing. Do book tours though, you actually do jump the never ending line of people! Hotels usually give you a map and they will advise you on tour companies (ours did, the Radisson, young man named Fabrizzio, very helpful and friendly) Didn't have a bad meal anywhere, although we did learn that if you like your steak well done forget it, you'll end up sending it back several times! Stick to fish and pasta, always fresh and always tastey! We used the "tube" a couple of times, very cheap and very quick, although best avoided during rush hours. Regarding it being a dirty city, don't know many major cities that aren't. You do see little cleaning trucks all over doing as much as they can to keep on top of it. You do need to be pretty fit to get around all the places that you must see, and then go back again for another look, well worth it. Spectacular fountains everywhere, on street corners, at crossroads, you can be walking around a corner and just virtually bump into one!!! We went for a last night meal at a beautiful place called "Harrys Bar" - expensive, around £75 per head with drinks, but worth it. Food was wonderful, service fantastic. Very romantic, piano player whilst you eat, glad I didn't go on the first night, wouldn't have wanted to eat anywhere else! Can hardly wait for my next visit to Rome, simply must go again!

Would love to go back one day

five stars

I absolutely loved Rome. I took my boyfriend there for his 30th birthday and have so many fond memories. We stayed in the old part of the city in the cosmopolitan hotel and every day we ventured through the forum, which is free. But if you get a ticket to go into the colessium you can also go to the palentine part of the forum which is amazing. Other unmissable sights are the pantheon, st peter's basillica and the vataican museums, and the trevi fountain. We walked everywhere so pack some comfy shoes, and the weather wa reasonable even in February so try to go in spring rather than summer, which will be unbareably hot. The hotel we stayed in was really beautiful and the staff were so friendly and accomodating: when they noticed my boyfriends birthday card they left a letter wishing him well and a bottle of parking wine in our room on our return! If you want to visit the pope, then when you visit st peter's basillica and stand directly in front of it, look to your right where everyone goes through the metal detectors. When you pass this there is a doorway with swiss guards marking it, if you queue there you can get tickets for a sermon, as we did! Whatever you do you will be amazed by this place: there is so much history wherever you go. Enjoy.

nice

Rome is a lovely place. There is a lot of traffic, though. You will need a good pairs of walking shoes and you will get lost several times. Get to the Vatican Museums early as you will have to queue for a long long time. Everything is so historical that i ended up missing some modern architecture like glass buildings and unusual sculptures.

Wonderful, wonderful Rome

five stars

When I arrived there with my best friend I had a stack of stuff to see but she insisted on going into every church that we passed. At first I thought this was going to be a bit of a drag (not being a very religious person)but I got interested and before the end of the first day I was obsessed. We were there for 3 weeks and we ended up going into over 70 churches. The completely over-the-top Baroque ones were splendid, of course, but in the end I think my favourites turned out to be the more unassuming medieval ones like Santa Maria in Trastevere (which was near where we were staying) which I ended up visiting almost daily, and even sitting through several services. Sant'Andrea delle Valle in the late afternoon with the sunlight streaming in through the dome's windows and bathing everything in a heavenly golden glow was just magical. It is important to look into every corner as there can be major works of art lurking in dark side-chapels.

Thieves Paradise

two stars

Recent 3 day visit to Rome has opened our eyes . We were advised to use the Metro to visit the Vatican , so we boarded a crowded train and my wife had a back pack reversed, so it was in front and she could clutch it. The bottom of the bag was sliced open and she lost cards, money etc, but the trauma this caused ruined the whole day. We went to the police station to fill out the report and was very shortly joined by an elderly threesome frome Ireland who had lost money and passport IN THE QUEUE for the VATICAN. Then another couple arrived who had lost a purse with money and cards. All this while we filled out the form in triplocate. How many more were victims that, and every day.
