Grazie, Roma!

five stars

My husband & I went to Italy for our honeymoon. I'd heard all the stories about Rome and how dirty and unfriendly it was. Much to our surprise and delight we found it to be the opposite. Rome is an ancient city with narrow streets/alleys, beautiful historical buildings, romantic cafes and nearly all within walking distance, if you're staying in Rome Center. We planned on one day for touring (we traveled to southern Italy from Rome) and ended up extending our trip by another day, yet still couldn't see everything. Some may say Rome is not so romantic, but it all depends on your idea of romance. We sat at an outdoor cafe on an early December morning having a little steaming, Italian cappucino watching the crowds milling around the Pantheon and a young Italian couple having their wedding pictures taken outside by the fountain during a light, misty rain. Romantic! And the people...friendly, helpful, trusting. So many went out of their way to show us the right direction or to give us helpful information. All with a smile and a prego! We can't wait for our next trip back!

Rome was amazing! The people were so kind and the food was at top notch! The Marriot Grand Hotel Flora was comfortable and in a good location, it had the best capp.!Shopping is awesome and cheap too! I cant wait to go back in the spring! Just be careful to arrive at the airport on any day but Sunday and the taxi fare is soooo not $100, so be careful.

Like a Roman

five stars

Rome is too hard to describe in words. It's a city that is not to be missed. If I had a choice of only one place to visit in Europe I would choose Rome.

Traffic and Taxis

three stars

Rome is filled with so much history and beautiful architecture. Unfortunately, one can really get lost in this magificent city. If you are travelling with one or two more people, I highly recommend taking taxis over the bus. It turned out cheaper for me and my companions and the taxis got us to our destination a lot quicker. In addition, some of newspaper stands near the Vatican ran out of bus tickets in the afternoon, which was a huge pain. If you want to stay in a centrally located hotel try Hotel Navona. It is in the heart of Rome and an easy walking distance to Trevi Fountain, Plaza Navona, and minutes to the Panthenon. Caveat: there are no lifts (elevators) and they don't accept credit cards.

Filthy and not friendly at all!

two stars

Spend one day and one night if you must. It is truly a disappointment. The place is filthy everywhere. The prices are high and the people are the most rude people I have ever run into. I have traveled to many places all over the world and I rate this one the worst! So many other cities in Italy are so much nicer. Go to Florence, Milan or any place else they are all much nicer in every way.

The best HOnemoon ever

five stars

We stayed at the Hotel Mariano on our honeymoon. We paid $1600 for a ravel package that included 2 roundtrip ticket, and 7day/6night hotel stay. The hotel included concierge service and complimentary breakfast. The hotel was conveniently located by the bus/train station which made for great commuting when we were tired of walking. We recommend staying close to the center of the city so you can walk to the sights. The shopping and food were great, and we found great deals (even with the exchange rate). Everyone was friendly and very helpful. We were able to sightsee on our own with the help of a basic travel guide. We went in the off-season and did not have to stand in line to see the sights. We even took the train to Tuscany for a day, and made it back with no problems.

Beautiful, friendly, safe.

five stars

Rome was just beautiful. We walked all over at night and felt safe. Just hold on to your wallet in the subways. The line at American Express for replacement cards was the longest of anything in the city.

Don't miss it

four stars

From what I've seen in movies and on TV, Rome is supposed to be this bustling, hectic, almost scary place to go if you're not used to that. That's why we only planned enough time to go to the Colloseum. Next time I plan to stay at least 3-4 days in Rome alone. It's not nearly as mind-boggling as I expected. It is fairly laid back, easy to get around, and so much is within walking distance if you're staying near the Colloseum. The Colloseum is underwhelming itself, so plan much more to do there. Walking at night, for a goup of only women, felt perfectly safe. There are police everywhere and the people there in general are just out having a good time, too.

Rome - Very Interesting but Not Romantic

two stars

While Rome is a fun and interesting place to visit, I'd have to disagree that its a "romantic" place to visit. It's crowded (and I go in the Winter - I can't imagine the crowd in the summer!!) and it is very dirty. Don't get me wrong, like I said, it is interesting because of all of its history, the ruins, the architecture, etc., but I've travelled all over the world and have been to spots that moreso fall into the "romantic places to visit" category.
