This is an old city that does not prostitute itself to the tourist dollar. The best bits are not found as you wait for your connecting train on your way from Rome to Sorrento - Naples is NOT an easy place to find your way around! OK, it is a sprawling, untidy, frequently dirty, sometimes dangerous city, but it is also vibrant, friendly, mysterious, artistic and utterly enchanting with the friendliest and most helpful taxi drivers I have ever met. Come with as good Italian as you can manage, sit in the thronging cafes late at night and speak to as many locals as possible - they are more than happy to advise you on hidden treasures around this wonderful city. Put aside time to visit the islands, the ruins at Pompeii and Ercolano, the volcano and the Amalfi coast, but don't let these spectacular sights overwhelm the amazing warmth and charm of an old city that reveals itself slowly and unexpectedly. I usually go twice a year and still haven't seen everything on the itinerary I made on my first visit!
