We drove to Naples from Rome planning to spend the night so we cpould visit Pompei and Mt Vesuvias, but when we got there our plans changed quickly! Mind you I was on my Honeymoon, I almost burst into tears and was frantically trying to figure out what country was the nearest we could drive into to get out of Italy. Naples is that BAD!!!!!! It's disgusting, filthy, scary looking. There was garbage and grafitti everywhere and everybody looked like a criminal. We took the next ferry out of there to the Island of Ischia, thank GOD for that. Ischia is beautiful but we went in the month of August so it was very crowded and hot. The Islands are beautiful, Naples is not. Don't be fooled by any other reviews......

(Report Problem)There are not many people on the planet who claim to dislike Italian food. Like all mediteranean diets, Italian food is also highly recommended by those who understand health and nutrition...so not only does it taste fantastic but your body will thank you immensly. But....go to Napoli and you enter a whole new realm of culinary delight!! It is not that their food is peculiar in any way...quite the contrary....it is very simple food. However it is ALWAYS fresh and cooked with LOVE....to me it seems that this is what the people of Naples live for every day. To them, life is about the food you eat and the people you share it with.....what an incredible experience!!! Yes the place is a bit dodgy in more ways than one but who cares? Every day of your life you have to eat in order to remain alive....so do yourself a favour and go to Naples to see how it is done properly.

(Report Problem)I am sorry to say but I did regret going to Naples. It's dirty, noisy and difficult to get around. Our hotel staff advised us not to go out after it's dark! We stayed near the central station at Piazza Garibaldi which is the most horrible area I have ever lived in. If you must go, don't stay near the station area. Its extremely dirty, noisy and above all unsafe. In hind sight I should have taken a train to Sorrento or some such small town on the Amalfi coast and not bothered with wasting time in Naples.
Great for: History/Culture

(Report Problem)This is an old city that does not prostitute itself to the tourist dollar. The best bits are not found as you wait for your connecting train on your way from Rome to Sorrento - Naples is NOT an easy place to find your way around! OK, it is a sprawling, untidy, frequently dirty, sometimes dangerous city, but it is also vibrant, friendly, mysterious, artistic and utterly enchanting with the friendliest and most helpful taxi drivers I have ever met. Come with as good Italian as you can manage, sit in the thronging cafes late at night and speak to as many locals as possible - they are more than happy to advise you on hidden treasures around this wonderful city. Put aside time to visit the islands, the ruins at Pompeii and Ercolano, the volcano and the Amalfi coast, but don't let these spectacular sights overwhelm the amazing warmth and charm of an old city that reveals itself slowly and unexpectedly. I usually go twice a year and still haven't seen everything on the itinerary I made on my first visit!

(Report Problem)Naples is crazy. Naples is lovely. Naples is dirty. Naples is charming. Naples is everything and nothing but it really depends what you make out of it. I wouldn't say it is your average tourist town as it isn't as tourist friendly as Florence for example. Naples is the REAL Italy for me and I have never loved and adored a place more than this city . The sea, the mountains, the food, the people, they all make this town great. But you have to know your way around and speaking the language will certainly help you. I would say it is essential but you don't need much Italian if you are just here to visit the islands of Ischia and Capri. They are used to the tourists there.... I now live in this fantastic city and every day I am learning something new. I love it! Go and explore it for yourself!

(Report Problem)Although Naples is thought of for it's crime, I must say that in living there for three months I never experienced a crime. Naples is an enchanting place filled with many things to do. Capo di Miseno is a great local hang out spot for younger generations at night. Canta Napoli, by Castel d'ovo, is a great restaurant/pizzeria... Naples also has incredible views and a great many affordable day trips... I highly recommend the city where pizza was born!!!
