A magical holiday with nonstop magic and history and places to see

five stars

We decided to rent a small house near the Fishermens Baston instead of staying in a hotel where there were rules and closing times and everything. So late in the evening, we could wander round the beautiful and historic streets. It was a magical holiday that i will never forget. So much to see and for someone like me who loves history and taking pictures or a romantic holiday, it was the best thing ever. i would definetly recomend it. There was so much to see and so many things to do. Only one word for it = Magical

beautiful historical buildings and sights, but rude, hostile people

two stars

We were disappointed. We thought Budapest would be a typical eastern European city, instead we found it to be over-priced, dirty, and seeming to have few polite people. It does have outstanding public transport and great museums, as long as you never have to deal with the locals.

Great for: History/Culture

Small Paris, big Prague

four stars

If you like Paris and its cafes, but think it's too big, if you like Prague's architecture, culture and History, but think it's too small - then go to Budapest!! You can find there everything what a tourist needs: wonderful sights, nightlife (take care of your money, though!), eating and drinking, turkish spas and shopping streets. Never take a taxi, it's unnecessary, the public transport is perfect to get everywhere at a reasonable price and good timetable. Much better than in London. The people (magyars, in their language and not Hungarians)...well...you can find extremely friendly and rude persons as well. Since I do not live in my hometown, Budapest, I think that, all in all, magyars are a little more rude than kind, what I do not understand at all, cause tourists take our reputation/fame (don't know which's the right word) to the world the especially the people who work at a tourist attraction should be extreme-helpful and kind. I still hope, that most of them are so. I was never a visitor at home.... All in all: Budapest (and the whole country, mainly the western part) absolutely worth a visit, like every other cities and hope when you return, you will think: I wanna go back!! Not just once.

Great city, but be wary of taxis!!!

four stars

Budapest is a jewel on the Danube ... simply beautiful. People are very welcoming and hotels and services are excellent. Only one bad point ... taxis. The taxi service seems to be badly regulated, or maybe mafia-regulated. Prices were ridiculous for very short journeys. Be especially careful of taxis at train stations ... born thieves!!!

Nice city, shame about some of the locals!

two stars

I found the city to be very cultural with some beautiful buildings but the locals i found to be very ignorant.I travelled to Budapest for a friends stag do with a party of 21 people. We were well behaved and just out for a bit of fun, but as soon as the locals can tell that your a tourist, they either completely ignore you or if its a bar/taxi/nightclub they try to rip you off by shortchanging you or over charging you.Especially watch out for the taxis. All in all i personally would not go back and nor would i encourage anyone to go there.Your money would be better spent elsewhere, where the locals would give you the time of day!

Beautiful place

five stars

I've been there recently for 2 weeks. It has been great fun and the weather has been terrific all the time. Buda is hilly, and I recommend Normafa hill for some trekking and bicycling. My favourite spot is Margit Island, great for family outings and going to the Spa. I have had great food in the restaurants and feel that it is the city to dine in, in regards to quantity, quality and price compared to the rest of Europe. Will definitely go back to visit the rest of the attractions and to see more of Hungary.

A Great Place to Visit for a long Weekend

four stars

I'm from UK but have been living and working in Budapest for the past year. It’s an interesting place and there is plenty to see and do for a long weekend, but you will need to look past and around the facades to see the real place. Hungarian's are naturally rude people and rarely smile in public. This can be very off-putting and it’s not until you realise they are like this to everyone (not only tourists) will you begin to understand them. They are proud people who love their country and think that they have been victimised for at least the past 100 years, constantly reminding all who will listen of the greater Hungarian empire, when it’s boarders stretched well into the lands of its neighbouring countries. Despite these losses, and perhaps because of them, they are not a very tolerant society and many are anti-semantic and prejudice against gypsies and non-Caucasians. They consider themselves to be a very intellectual society and will proudly rattle off all their great artistic and academic achievements.

Great for: History/Culture, Theatre/Music
