I have been going to Crete since the 1970s. I have seen the transformation of the tourist resort of malia from a loveley spot to a complete hell hole. The brits should be banned especiallythe groups of louts you see on the plane going to Crete during summer. They show they are ignorent of the culture and lifestyle in Crete. Iam ashamed by them.

(Report Problem)of all the greek islands crete has most interesting history, from the minoans,to what happened in ww 2. there is a good coice of tavernas, hotels and resteraunts'and a great nightlife.we stayed in hersonisos, halfway between old town and new town,so we could alternate trad greek nights with niteclubs.we went on a boat trip that took us to various fishing villages, and beaches, fed us at lunchtime, lasted about 4 hours -well worth 15 euros.always check gazeteer at travelagents to make sure what the accomodation is like! the only thing i hated were the crappy main roads between the main towns, worst driving in europe!-keep off them if u can,go on bus or organised tour

(Report Problem)After spending 6 months there in 2006 I must say I fell in love with the place. Although the majotity of the Island is still very primitive The Cretan people I found were very accomodating if You showed them the respect They deserved. The accomodation is very basic and the driving is the most dangerous I have seen in Europe, having seen many accidents in the time I was there. It seems that the Cretans need to move with the times and update their tourist industry as the price are escalating the standards are in decline and with so many low cost flights, the World has become a very small place. They were moaning that the tourists were less and less each year and the season seemed to be getting shorter but They did not have the acumen or the leadership to tackle this and move forward. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful Island with beautiful food and lots of history and culture and the cretans have an element of craziness about Them which makes Them intrigueing. The home of the Gods.

(Report Problem)Love the place, great history, plenty to see. Plenty of choise of nice hotels in Agios Nikolaos. Lots of tavenas that cook from fresh food, not frozen or microwaved. Find were the greeks eat the food is good and not expensive. Beaches great and weather good. Most of the greeks speek more than one language and i found them freindly. The greeks are very much for family and welcome children at every chance, what ever place and any time which i can say more than some holiday resorts. Live music everyweek and i hear september they have a tourist day with lots of entertainment. I would go back, thought it was great.

(Report Problem)Crete has some nice features such as ruins and some nice beaches nut that's about it. But all in all it is way overrated. The people ra efriendly but primitive, languages are barely spoken, connections through Athens are horrendous and always late. have you seen the airport at Heraklion? Road safety is nil; have you seen how many squashed animals tare there on the streets? The same goes for quality at most hotels and resturants (save 5* Elounda resorts). Most scary is the gun craze and the drug war waging on the hills for 30 years. Real hard to believe this place.

(Report Problem)an exceptionally nice island, plenty of opportunitys such as cruises to nearby islands. The island has a nice sealine full of beautiful beaches and lively bvillages and towns. The one problem with the island is the hotels many are very basic and small making it feel very cramped. However if you rent a villa it will be very enjoyable, the villas are of varied sizes and am odern design, a short drive away from the beaches and other facilities.
