The history of the place is quite amazing. However, the economics of the place i.e- the euro, has made it expensive. For some reason the restaurant/bars have hiked up prices 3/4 fold! (Service wasn't great- found greeks to be a bit rude.) Probably owing to the economics. Couldn't help feeling like they ripped you off! A beer was getting on for 4 times the price of the same bottle/brand in the shops!

My Favourite Greek Island

I have been to a few of the islands over the years, and liked them all but I really fell in love with Crete. We found a really cheap deal, for 5 star apartments and thought it would be "get what you payf for"... not at all! The weather was amazing, the quality of restaurants were superb, and the accomodation really was 5 star! I will go back without a second thought!

Don't bother going there!

Stayed in Hotel Nikos in Crete...what a mess! the people of Crete are very rude towards English people for some reason. I spent my holiday feeling very uncomfortable over there. The island is nice, however its the atmosphere and the approach of the people that really let this place down, Spain is much friendlier. If you do decide to book in Crete stay very clear from the hotel Nikos, there are flies all over your room it is disgusting, the staff are very rude and only want your money! Stray dogs are also allowed to wonder around the hotel and manage to get into your room.

Beware all who enter

We have just got back from Kos, where we have stayed several times because we love this town. However on this last holiday instead of booking with a travel agent we booked through the internet which we have done several times before without a problem. Not on this occassion. We booked with Low Cost Beds the Lydia Apartments & Hotel, upon arrival at 10.00pm they had no record of our booking and informed us that they had no room for us, after several phone conversations between myself and the agent, and the staff of the Lydia and the agent they agreed to put us up for the night. The next day when we approached the staff to find out about our accomodation we were told not to worry it was sorted. Then on the 3rd day they told us we would have to move (3 of us) to another hotel as they needed our room for 1 night, we later found out that this had happened to 12 other people and it is a regular occurance. We had to beg for clean towels, they only change them once during your stay, policy. We had to beg for a fresh toilet roll as there had been none in the apartment upon arrival. We thought that was bad enough, we were then ate alive by mosiktos, my friend had felt things crawling over her in the night, she ended up with 9 bites on her face. Any time we complained to the staff or asked them for anything we got attitude and surly responses. Anyone booking the Lydia Apartments and Hotel in Kos, Kos town, should also be aware they are 2 miles from the town and 1.5 miles from the beach.

Sunny Maleme!

We just spent a great 2 weeks at Sunny Suites in Maleme, near Chania. Manos the owner is an excellent host, and our room was basic but very comfortable & clean. Maleme itself is very quiet, but it's great to have the beach almost to yourself. Yes, it's a bit pebbly, but just buy some jelly shoes! Bus service surprisingly good into Platanias & Chania which are more lively with some nice shops. But we didn't eat out in Chania as there are people hassling you to go into their tavernas which put us off totally. Platanias was better, but overpriced in our opinion, especially the drinks. In fact the best meals we had were in Maleme itself, The Black Lantern on the main road really stood out for quality & a different menu. For traditional Greek meals we enjoyed the Wave on the seafront, and also a taverna half way down to the sea, Persma or something. We'd like to return next year, it was a really laid back, relaxing holiday.

"EXCELLENT"

I have been to crete several times now staying in malia which boasts some of the best nightlife in europe i would highly recommend crete to anyone as it is a fantastic island with historic beuty and many attractions, there is something for eveyone. The local people are very friendly and the service provided is second to none. overall: "EXCELLENT"

Fantastic

I have been to Crete since 1992 , a paradise in Europe . Since 1994 i'm staying at Mike.s Hotel Apartments in Chania and have returned 2-3 times each year at various times of the year. what can i say apart from they are the best well maintained and serviced apts i have been to and the owners and staff are the most polite and friendly people you would care to meet, nothing is to much trouble and if they dont have something you want they will endeavour to get it to make sure you have a great time. the home cooked food at mike's hotel which is all traditional cretan food is prepared by helena the owner wife and is delivered to your table by excellent staff and always with most politeness and good manner. for me i will never find a place that will match the location and character of mike's apts and i will never find the service that i have recieved for the last 11 years take my word for it that this is an oustanding place to stay and you will not regret booking (you can also book direct with the owners son manos who will always reply to any emails he receives of you would like anymore info from myself dont hesitate to contact me on lord.mike@virgin.net i also have many pictures of the surrounding locations which im sure will tempt you to try this location

I need sunshine!

I would like to stay close to a beautiful beach, with much sun, good food, nice places to go with kids, beatiful historical areas to visit, nice people to meet.
