Totally underrated city, go now!

five stars

Berlin, like all modern cities, is continually developing. It's a very modern city, with deep historical roots. This is evident more in the West with many modern buidings jostling for space with beautiful relics from the past - best shown by the 'broken tooth' cathedral at the end of the Ku'damm. The East is stark in contrast, but refreshingly open and spacious. The feeling of history you get walking through the Brandenburg gate is priceless, and the museums are spot on - my favourite was the Art Deco museum. The locals seem very friendly, open and relaxed - the total reverse of London. Restaurants are great - Oranienburger Strasse is the place to go for cheap interesting food from around the world. Bars are friendly and the clubs are something else. I went in Summer 2004 and had such a fantastic week I went back for new year, which was a mad experience (mind the fireworks though! Do these people not have health and safety laws?). The Park Inn hotel I stayed in over new year is well priced, very smart (now its been modernised), has a nice bar, friendly staff and is central and well connected to the rest of the city. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn are clean and reliable, and are the best way to get around with sensibly timed early morning first trains to carry you back to your hotel after a night out. It's also a comparitively safe city, with a low crime rate meaning you rarely feel wary walking down quiet streets at night. I'll be going back very soon as I've yet to go to the top of the Fernsehturm!

Great for: History/Culture, Nightlife, Budget Travel

not what i expected

three stars

berlin is a great place to travel to but you have to like very odd places. For example the fact that berlin is so much just for the people that live there and to see family. its not a great place for an exotic get away

Berlin is crazy!!

four stars

Berlin was a crazy city! There was so much to see and do that you could easily spend a week here. I would highly suggest buying a pass for the public transportation, because you can get anywhere you want to really easily (though they are a little scary at night - I was grabbed in a subway while walking with a large group of people). Other than that bad experience, this is a city that is constantly moving!

The most exciting city in Europe

five stars

There is a sense of energy and dynamism- a truly extraordinary city which has cutting edge architecture; a world class transportation system; fascinating museums; great shops and wonderful neighbourhoods. Although still scarred from the War and the division of the City in two- it is rapidly becoming one of the great Europiean centres of art; music and culture I have been delighted to go many times and am always looking forward to my next trip

Ich bin Berliner

four stars

I went to Berlin in February flying Ryanair from London I flew into Schonefield airport and took the S9 into the city. I spent the morning looking at the Jewish museum and Checkpoint Charlie, which has alot of Soviet merchandise around. They also had part of the Berlin wall there as well. I then spent the afternoon in central Berlin, this is where all the major museums are and the main cathedral. They also had quite a few statues such as of Fredrick the Great in the middle of the round. Brandeberg Gate is massive and the Reichstag is pretty close by. The Reichstag has a nice glass dome. I spent the night at AO Hostel Zoo which is next to the Zoological Garden station, you could hear a train go past every 10 minutes and the walls are paper thin so I heard some hammering going on in the hallway. The next day I went to see the Royal Palace in Charlottesburg, the garden is huge and took me over an hour to walk, however there weren't any leaves on the trees. After that I saw the various minor attractions around such as the telecommunications tower, I didn't go to the observation level since it was pretty cloudly that day.
