No-one can fail to love a place if you make a tiny part of it your home. I was lucky enough to stay first of all near the Luxembourg gardens at the Odeon. Each time I return to the same area ( hostels at 20 euros a night, flights from Manchester for £60))and widen my day's circle, frequenting old haunts like Shakespeare and Co and eating in the Greek quarter while exploring and learning a little more of its history each time: reading of Sartre and de Beauvoir in St Germaine, visiting the markets in rue Mouffetard, observing Foucault's pendulum in the Pantheon and discovering new tables in old corners to sit and sip and just be - in Paris. 'To be woken up by kisses on a blue sky Paris morning. Ask me what bliss is: this is.' L.E.
