Belize is Amazing!

five stars

I have been to Belize and I have to say, Belize City is a very dirty place and I've heard that crime is rampant, but once you get out of this city and into the rainforests or on an island, you will be highly impressed. This place is not for someone who does not expect a little adventure. We stayed at the Jaguar Paw Jungle Resort and tubed down the Caves Branch River.......this was one of the most awesome experiences I've ever had! The water in the river is crystal clear and blue and the resort had pretty good food and a nice bed to lay down in. Then we went to Caye Caulker and the waters here were extremely blue and beautiful, unlike anything I've seen before and I've traveled alot! So, Belize is an amazing place, once you get out of the city.

Go to the islands

four stars

I split my vacation between Belize City and Ambergris Caye. The island was great, although the poor sections are located close to the resorts, but it IS an island! I would stay the full vacation there next time, and avoid the city. And bring your own fishing gear!

Leave the city to experience Belize

two stars

Our ship staff on the Carnival Glory advised us not to travel alone here so we took a guided bus city tour and visited ruins. We had to drop anchor 3 miles out since the waters around Belize are shallow. Since our boat was so big, it took a long time to get everyone ashore. On the brief bus ride through the city we saw mostly run down structures & homes badly in need of paint and repair. I would not have felt safe walking the streets here. Visitors to Belize city need to go outside the city to experience the natural beauty of the area. Our trip to the Altun Ha ruins took about an hour. The road was narrow in some areas & I had to hold on tightly around turns. The A/C worked well, though & the driver was good. The guide explaining the ruins was most informative and we enjoyed the excusion. We were able to climb the main ruin. I felt I had received a new appreciation for the Mayan culture. I also thought that we had plenty of time to see the ruins and climb. We were not rushed. Once back in the city, we entered through the dockside tourist shopping area in order to return to our tender boats and found the whole area lacking. They need to fix up this area. The shopping was dismal. Save your shopping for Cozumel. Yes, go to Belize but take an excursion out of the city.

I Love Belize

five stars

If you didnt like Belize, you didn't see the real Belize. Belize city is terrible. You need to either go south to Placencia, or to the islands, Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker. The people/land/water are just beautiful. Remember, this is a third world country. They have a long way to go to be "convenient" but they have come such a long way towards independence. I LOVE Belize, and can't wait to go back. You owe it to yourself to give them another chance, and not be a snob when you do.

GOING AGAIN IN JUNE!!!

five stars

YOU MUST GET OFF THE BEATEN TRACK! GO TO THE CAYES! THAT'S WHERE THE BEAUTY OF BELIZE IS, NOT IN BELIZE CITY. CAYE CAULKER AND SAN PEDRO ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACES I'VE EVER BEEN...GOING BACK IN JUNE!!!

Adventure's Calling Your Name!

four stars

Please DO NOT JUDGE BELIZE BY BELIZE CITY! I agree that this city is dirty and I didn't feel safe there. Trust me, Belize is SO MUCH MORE. Look to the north of the city, the west, and the south. I went a couple of years ago for 2 weeks. It was the most amazing experience I've had to date. If you're an adventurer or if you just appreciate uncommercialized nature (45 percent of Belize is Government Protected Reserve!) then this is definitely a must see and do for you. Snorkeling in the Ho Chan Reserve, Scuba Diving, Cave Exploring, the Mayan Ruins, Hiking in the Jungle, Jaguar reserves, Baboon Reserves, Jacque Costeau's (sp?) Blue Hole...Rio On Pools, the 1000 foot waterfall in Mountain Pine Ridge...the people, the cultures, the history...It's all AMAZING! If you are looking for something touristy---sandy beaches, hotels on the beach...Check out San Pedro Island just off the Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world. Or try Francis Coppela's Blanca Neux Resort in the Mayan Mountains by the 5 Sisters Waterfalls---all I can say is WOW ( and it should be at over 400 USD a night!) And of course there's the Maruba Resort with it's spa treatments and the free-roaming "doemsticated" monkeys that you can actually sit with and feed hibiscus flowers to. I don't know that I would recommend Belize to those looking for the monetary, no fuss, silver spoon, "finer" things in life. Even Maruba has its "faults" compared to let's say The Hilton or Westin Resorts, and Blanca Neux is in the middle of NOWHERE---you need to take a small 5 seater plane to get there because by car it is an absolute 3 hour nightmare!---even to stay at these places you should arrive with a sense of adventure. However, for me, and to any other adventurer or environmentalist, Belize is the epitomy of NATURE's finer things. Please make the journey. It will be the trip of a lifetime.

Belize rocks, cruise shippers are losers

five stars

If you can get away from the lame, whiney cruise ship people, this place is a much better choice than costa rica. Cruise shippers should not come here anymore, they are babies.
