Overall

Our ship staff on the Carnival Glory advised us not to travel alone here so we took a guided bus city tour and visited ruins. We had to drop anchor 3 miles out since the waters around Belize are shallow. Since our boat was so big, it took a long time to get everyone ashore. On the brief bus ride through the city we saw mostly run down structures & homes badly in need of paint and repair. I would not have felt safe walking the streets here. Visitors to Belize city need to go outside the city to experience the natural beauty of the area. Our trip to the Altun Ha ruins took about an hour. The road was narrow in some areas & I had to hold on tightly around turns. The A/C worked well, though & the driver was good. The guide explaining the ruins was most informative and we enjoyed the excusion. We were able to climb the main ruin. I felt I had received a new appreciation for the Mayan culture. I also thought that we had plenty of time to see the ruins and climb. We were not rushed. Once back in the city, we entered through the dockside tourist shopping area in order to return to our tender boats and found the whole area lacking. They need to fix up this area. The shopping was dismal. Save your shopping for Cozumel. Yes, go to Belize but take an excursion out of the city.
