For the first time in 1999, I finally visited my homeland and the city I was born in. I heard so much things about Manila through my parents especially on my mother side from my aunts and uncles when I was growing up...but the Manila they were describing was the Pre-War Manila at that time, the Pearl of the Orient. The more I heard about it, the more I was eager to see it. I wanted to see the places that I heard of in their stories such as Intramuros, Santa Cruz, Binondo, Chinatown, San Miguel, Tondo, Paco, Ermita, and Malate. When I finally went, it helped me open my eyes to see and appreciate where I truly came from. Manila was a great place to visit for me and the suburbs such as Ayala-Alabang hauntingly reminded me of being somewhere in the suburbs of of L.A. However, unfortunately, the Manila we see today isn't what I wish I could've seen before it was totally destroyed. The few remaining vestiges of it's past are well worth the visit. I've looked in old books of what pre-war Manila looked like compared to now and today's Manila pales in comparison. But Manila is still worth seeing. What I remember hearing from my mom and them all the time when a relative would come to visit us from the Philippines to the States is: "Is Manila finally finished?" "Is it beautiful again?" What I want to say to them TODAY is, "Yes, Manila is beautiful, again." (We left Manila in 1970 when I was 2 and from what I've read from travel books from 1960's on Manila, the city was still going through massive construction from World War II).

(Report Problem)manila is THE place to shop.. uber cheap and the shopping centers are fabulous (e.g. powerplant mall, glorietta, greenbelt, the podium, shangri-la, robinsons galleria, alabang town center.. most of these are in makati, btw)!! the food is terrific, from italian to mongolian cuisine they have it. the clubs, cafes, bars etc are great too. the night life is awesome, there are a lot of concerts and events to watch. visiting a beach is a must (e.g. boracay, puerto galera, bohol, palawan, el nido) cause they're simply beautiful. the people are hospitable and friendly and can speak good english. only prob is the pollution and safety but hey nearly every country has that problem. i'm definitely coming back!

(Report Problem)I just got back from a 7 weeks stay in Manila. There's no doubt Philippines could be one of the best place in the world except that the smog is so bad that it ruins it. I eperienced my 1st Asthma attack here and hope intensive measures will be implemented as I don't see myself coming back to the country that I loved.
