Delhi- like hell only better

four stars

On my first trip to Delhi I hated every minute and my travelling companion and I affectionately refered to it as "the devils armpit". The men gorped at me all day long, the traffic was awful and there were far to many scuttling creatures for my liking. However, I have since been back several times and my impression of Delhi has improved with every visit- still I would strongly recommend that if you haven't been to India before don't fly into Delhi- you'll want to catch the next flight home!

Great for: History/Culture, Budget Travel

Better than other Indian cities

five stars

I just love this city, much better than Mumbai, has a history and some great architectural works. Is truly cosmopolitan, and has some very modern suburbs - Gurgaon and NOIDA.

Great for: Hiking/Camping, History/Culture, Theatre/Music, Nightlife, Budget Travel

Modern yet cultural

four stars

Visited Delhi after many years and was delighted to see the changes!! The city though very cultural is now very modern with sophisticated stores and restaurants ( many of international chains) sprouting up. The hotels are fabulous and boast only one word' Luxury'. The city is quite populated and people quite friendly 'n' helpful though you got to be careful when shopping in certain areas where a lot of bargaining takes place.Summer is hot but winters can be really cold.Having spend some time in the capital we took excursions to Agra , Rajasthan and the mountains in the north - was a very delightful experience though tiring with a lot of traffic at times. The city is flooded with foreign tourists in winters and the the pubs, restaurants and bars quite busy. It is a complete transformation of India and it doesn't feel like the third world at all now. Therefore, we are recommending our family and friends in the U.S. as well to visit beautiful India.

Ugh, Delhi...

one star

I started and ended my one month trip in India in Delhi... I absolutely love India, but I never want to set foot in that city again. Arriving at the airport at 4am, my pre-arranged taxi nowhere in sight, I had to take one of the prepaid taxis into the city. The guy takes me in circles around my hotel, proceeds to drive down a dark empty alley, turns off the ignition and gets out to talk to his "friend" who works at a "travel agency" which is closed at the moment...brings the guy over and they both try to get in the taxi with me. Being a single woman traveling alone, this was obviously not cool. I had to literally scream at them to get the "friend" out of the car and the driver to start the ignition and take me to my hotel. When I got to the hotel, the room I had reserved a month ago was "not available," so the desk clerk calls his "friend" at another hotel...you get the picture. The city is filthy and polluted, the people I had to deal with were constantly trying to scam me, I did not feel safe, it was difficult to get around, and I was not the least bit interested in hanging around the tourist area with destinations such as the Marriott, Nike and McDonalds. Not all was lost. The spice market was intriguing. As was seeing hundreds of people sleeping on the bare floor of their shops along the streets after dark. It was an experience for sure, but not one I have any intention of repeating. Every other town and village I visited was full of friendly people, awesome food and wonderful experiences. Khajuraho, Jhansi, Varanasi, Bodh Gaya... My advice is, if you want to experience the non-tourist-trap India, spend some time in the smaller towns and villages.

Awesome!!!

five stars

I went with bunch of my american friends visiting India for the first time. It was awesome! we had a blast!. Delhi has everything to offer...In old Delhi you can see actual see history ie depending upon where you go ...things are still happening the way they would have lets say 100 or 50 or 10 years ago. While New Delhi (only 3 miles away) offers everything a modern US city offers but diff culture, tropical env, friendly people and super value. We all loved it!

I love India!!!!!!!!!!!!!

five stars

I've read before that India in general is an assault on your senses. Delhi is not the exception. Hectic and calm... the streets are like nothing you've ever seen. People, cars, cows all sharing the space available in "special" harmony. Go into one of the many temples and you'll be sourrounded by an undescribable peace. Polluted yet incredebly beautiful! Delhi is not one of the cleanest cities by any means but somehow in a magical way it makes you see beyond that. I can't really put into words how special this place is, all I can say is that India in general is a must!!! If you are not an open minded individual maybe India is not for you!

great city to live in

five stars

new delhi is a different city for western folks since it is one of the oldest cities in the world. It was a center of british raj, and mogul reign in india. this city emcampses both old ear and fast ewn era in the surrounding cities such as noida and gurgaon where Modern IT sector is flourishing.
