Spent over a month a year in HK for 20 years (owned business). As review says bustle and crowds are a big turn off to many. I used to say that HK represented both the best (fast money) and worst (overcrowding and poor working conditions)of capitalism. I often would stay in Hong Hum in martial arts studio/church and escape to more rural Chinese settings. Preferred to go to parks and countryside for meditation and to relax. Morning Tai Chi classes are a must for visitors and enjoy the many Chinese celebrations. However, no matter how much I tried, both Cantonese and Mandarin escaped me. Your review of people's reaction to Chinese takeover may be very true of younger residents, but most of my acquantances, who lived for many years under Chinese rule in China, fled the country. And their children still in HK are quite nervous about the future (as you point out).
