(Report Problem)I took the Gate 1 "Best Buy" 7 day tour of Chile. Didn't think much of bus tour to Vina del Mar and Valaparaiso. But, really enjoyed the home of Pablo Neruda in La Isla Negra and wine country tours especially the Viu Manent winery which included a ride in a horse drawn carriage through the vineyards. If ever in the town of Cunaco, go to the Panpan Vinovino restaurant - the best meal I had my entire visit. Stayed in the Diego de Almagro hotel which had polite, English speaking front desk attendants and bell boys, a good breakfast buffet, and was very clean. However, the bed in my room was very soft, the table / floor lamps were worn and the entire place could use some sprucing up. But, the hotel's bathroom and air conditioning were modern and there were two computers in the lobby to use free of charge. The pool was very small but the patio received sunlight. The location was okay - it's possible to walk to the downtown area - but unspectacular. If you want ammenities stay somewhere else. Go to downtown Santiago which has many streets closed to traffic and have the gelato. The hot dogs and sandwiches all have a lot of mayo. The favorite local dish is bistec al pobre which consists of steak, sauted onions and fries topped with two fried eggs. The food is generally high in fat. Have a drink at the outdoor cafe in Plaza de Armas. Definately go to the Central Market for a seafood lunch (it's not open for dinner). The people are polite and very European. There are lots of working class bars with outdoor seating on Pio Nono street in the Bellavista district. The metro is clean and easy to use but it closes at 10:30 PM. Go into every church you see and check out the architecture; there are plenty of colonial era style buildings. The government buildings are ordinary. Would I go back? Yes. But, bear in mind, Chile is a big country and some of the best parts are outside of Santiago. Better to take a tour of the whole country from Tierra del Fuego through the lake district to the Atacama desert. All tourist guides said shorts and t-shirts were fine. I disagree. Even in the warmest weather most men wore long trousers and most tucked in their shirts; I recommend doing the same to fit in and to look presentable. Wearing shorts mainly translates as "tourista." Eat the food that is in season. In February that means tomatoes and peaches. Have many Pisco sours too. The wine in restaurants is sold by the bottle so be prepared to drink up; very few offer wine by the glass and, if they do, the selection is very small. The supermarkets are good places to shop and teeming with good food. I liked the working class feel of the downtown part of the city. Avoid the American fast food joints like Burger King, McDees and KFC. Santiago has lots of its own fast food that is unique to the area and is worth trying.
