Overall

auckland sucks. if you're looking for new zealand, go somewhere else. you'd have virtually no idea you where in nz by being in auckland. most of the population is foreign. it's also a dirty and dangerous city (at least downtown). it's even unsafe in the mornings, around 6am, because drunks are still filing out of the ever-open bars. the homeless are belligerent and everywhere. seriously, head to the south island.
