Head for the hills. Not the real New Zealand.

As a family of 5 we arrived in Auckland with high expectations of a fantastic first impression of New Zealand. How disappointed we were...at times we felt we were back in Singapore given the overwhelming South Asian influence, the difference being most of the city centre was dirty and run down. Luckily we stayed in the lovely Viaduct Harbour area which has been redeveloped following the Americas Cup success. Christchurch is a far better bet...we fell in love with it. To sum Auckland up in the words of a fellow New Zealander on the beautiful Coromandel,"Any Aucklanders here? Welcome to New Zealand!"

Top 3 City

Beautiful place - its got everything. Stunning skyline and natural harbour - perfect climate - never too hot never too cold and a great gateway to the magic of NZ.

Great for: Beaches, Hiking/Camping, Nightlife, Budget Travel, Family Holidays

I fully rate it!

Wow..the mighty mighty Auckland, pearl in the Pacific.. Atmosphere is great when the weather is great.. The only threats to your safety are the useless drivers.. Good value for money? Hardly.. Aucklanders are clever and tend to overcharge whenever they can.. so shop around! Public transport gets progresively worse the further you go from the city, but generally in the city and immediate suburbs its good. Weather is unpredictable, so bring a change of clothing! Overall, lots to do for ALL age groups - young people, theres awesome pubs and bars, old people - DONT go to the places for young people, theres museums and galleries gallore! ENJOY!

Dont waste vacation time here

We, a family of 5, were there in January 2005 and did not enjoy our stay. In fact, we left the very next morning and wound up at Lake Taupo, which was definately more family oriented. If you are expecting an international city like Sydney, forget it. The streets are littered, dirty, and many of the downtown building are vacant or are seedy peep shows and all night bars. Not family oriented, no good city transportation, and nothing interesting to see. All of New Zealand is expensive, but your dollars are better served outside this city.

People aren't nice to tourist especially in the airport

The airport staff that our tour met in Auckland Airport wasn't nice to greet tourist and so does staff in the airplane.

You can always find something to! On top of that the people are so nice! Don't forget to bring an umbrella, especially if you go in June!

Just another big city

Love New Zealand, but Auckland is just another big city. Better to spend your time in other parts of the country - Cape Reinga, Abel Tasman, Queenstown, etc.

Auckland is awesome.

Awesome place, lovely people, great weather, lots to do, very safe. Don't miss Christmas in the Park on Auckland Domain, if you're there in December. Mission Bay is perfect for late afternoon relaxation. If you feel like a beer, go to De Fontein. Great view of the bay from the second floor balcony. If you like boats, paradise is there, more boats than people.

unforgettable moment in my life

the first time i was arrived there.. i can breath the fresh air that i never feel before in my life.Auckland is my first place that i've traveled alone without my guidance.Besides,the first country that i traveled because i never travel to overseas before this.I love their culture where very helpful,polite and the most important things is very friendly.Eventhough i was quite surprised when i saw many asean live there and taht time I was thinking where i am at that time.Korea,China...but it doesnt important because the place is auckland not other places..i love when i can drink a cup of coffee besides the harbour and can see the blue sea with the ships and bird flying..ooh!!it is the best time in my life and i planned to go there for once again beause until now i still miss that place eventhough i just went there for a couple of week..seriously really miss the place.
