Caveat Emptor

one star

I've lived in many places and I have to strongly disagree with what most people have been saying. San Antonio isn't as great a place as most people have been saying. The crime is bad in SA. Gangs and gang shootings are an everyday occurrence. The roads here are deadly. At least one person dies everyday on San Antonio roads. Insurance prices for cars reflect the danger on the roads and the crime. Even in gated communities cars get stolen. People get beat up downtown and the SA police are nonexistant. I still have yet to see an SA cop do anything, whether it be pulling over a speeder or stop a fight on the riverwalk. Taxes on property are outrageous. A large reason why so many people live beyond the county borders, including the SA Spurs athletes. The city council is corrupt. An example is the lack of competition in the grocery store situation. There is only one, HEB. Everyone else were run out of town. Finally, there is nothing to do. Most people go out of town or Austin to do something. People in SA are rude and not very hospitable. The weather is hot and oppressive.

Try it, you'll like it!

five stars

I loved San Antonio. I had never been to Texas and never cared to go. I went on a business/vacation trip. From the moment we arrived at the airport until we left I had a completly wonderful time. I was very pleasantly surprised at the polite, warm and welcoming people there. I'd have to say it should be voted "friendliest city". I have been to cites that consistantly get this title and believe me they do not even come close to the San Antonians. So, I would recomend to anyone who hasn't visited Texas to give S.A a try.

Big City...small town feel

five stars

San Antonio is a big city, now bigger than Dallas, with a small town feel. You have all the benefits of a large city with some laid-back comfort. Also, anything you can't get here...you can get in nearby Austin (1 hour up the interstate). Also, Its not TOO far from cities like Houston and Dallas...and its also near the beach and Mexico. Great culture, diversity, and fun! Plenty to do downtown...and ALL around the metro...(nice museums, parks, theme parks, shows, etc...for children too!)The nearby Hill Country with Lakes are great to check-out too...GREAT state parks to hike, camp, etc....The small hill country towns (Gruene, New Braunfels, San Marcos) are also fun. So much to do and see...if you get bored...you're not looking.

A real view of San Antonio

two stars

Seeing it on the list of Top 10 family places is so wrong. The only things for tourists to do is eat. So if your looking for a vacation thats going to add 10lbs then it's the right spot. The places that are set up as "attractions" i.e. The Alamo are very much over rated and I definatly would not plan a vacaton around going to see that. The only real places to take children are Sea World, Fiesta Texas (Great Adventure)a couple of water parks. If a family is going to spend their mony on plane tickets and hotels or even drive I would suggest somewhere with a whole lot more, and thats not San Antonio.

San Antonio Is The Place To Be!!

five stars

San Antonio is a very family oriented vacation resort. Sea World is a "must" for any family. Sea World has the best shows in town and has some fun rides, but Fiesta has the best rides. You have got to check out Ripley's Believe It Or Not wax museum and haunted house. Being from Louisiana I have to say San Antonio has more to offer than New Orleans. It is cleaner and tends to have a better overall atmosphere for family vacations.

worth a return trip

five stars

I love the riverwalk in downtown San Antonio. Night or day is a great time to visit. I would recomend staying in one of the many hotels on the riverwalk so that you can walk everywhere. The parking at river center mall is only $8 a day if you must drive. We visited during spring break and the weather was perfect. In the summer it may be best to visit at night. I felt very safe always. Oh yea, the Alamo is here too.
