Expensive, dangerous, dirty, and no culture. The disgustingly rich and the poorest of the poor. There are many other places where culture doe s not depend on how much money you have.

When hoteliers tell you not to walk on the streets, safety is a concern. Choice shows and diverse foods are pluses.

New York, New York!!

four stars

There was so much to do and see, we couldn't get to it all. The people were wonderful, not what you would expect. The prices were high but the volume of alternatives made up for it.

Not Romantic

two stars

Every hotel is EXPENSIVE, difficult to get around, not a romantic atmosphere at all and definitely not relaxing. New York is fine for a business trip, or if you want to see the Statue of Liberty, but not a romantic getaway.

Enjoy.. As A Prince or Pauper

four stars

I have been to New York City 3 times. I once stayed in a fairly nice hotel in Manhattan, once in a motel on the outskirts, last time at the YMCA. Must say as strange as the YMCA is (long hallways painted black, marathon walks to the washrooms/showers and pay phones, all night partying, lumpy bunk beds. tiny room with tv barely working) this was the most fun that I had in New York. It was a cheap package deal which included all breakfasts cafeteria style or breakfast down the street at a small greasy spoon, which were adequate and all one really requires. It was centrally located, included a half day tour with boat ride including Statue of Liberty(boat was jammed packed with students and line ups too long to bother attempting a tour of the lady. We opted to take photos of her instead, grab a snack and buy a post card which one could get stamped at the gift shop with"Statue of Liberty".We then sent it to ourselves.) Our deal also included a tour of Chinatown with dinner, St. Patricks Cathederal,Harlem. On our own we walked to Little Italy (a festival in process)Greenich Village, had a brew,Empire State Building(crowded but amazing and worth it)Bought big old pretzles and ate them while we took the ferry to Coney Island. We visited the street market, the harbourfront area,Tiffanys, took a horse and carriage ride through Central Park, bought tacky t-shirts at the bargain shops, visited antique markets, shopped in all the big department stores.Didn't get to see a show. (Hey, we're from Toronto...we didn't need to.) We really did have a blast. All together, we figured that we walked 23 miles in 3 days by the map. The folks are friendly, the weather was nice and there is lots to see and do. On the other hand...although it had improved slightly on my third visit to NYC...the streets and subway train systems are dirty, lots of graffiti and I felt more nervous on the trains...safety-wise... than I did walking. The litter was caked up at least 6 inches in the gutters, the drivers were frightening. Somehow it seemed safer to cross against the lights, because no-one stopped anyway. And DO NOT show anyone Canadian cash. It truly frightens them. The first time I went there my boyfriend only had Canadian cash left in his pocket but the cashier was appalled, called the manager over and they ACTUALLY gave us the meal, rather than take our currency. All in all though NYC is a great place to visit, no matter how you cut it,king or pauper, but as they say "Wouldn't want to live there"

I won't go back.

two stars

It costs a fortune just to get around $5-7 tolls for bridges and tunnels. Hasn't anybody ever heard of a power washer? They should take a look at Paris. Subway is convenient but how safe is it? No very impressive. I won't go back.
