I've just returned home from my travels around Tanzania and I have to say Zanzibar is the most relaxing place ive ever been. The beaches were pristine, and during the week completely deserted. At weekends they got slightly busier but nothing like the beaches in Europe! I found that if you venture in to Stone Town then there is a bit more hustle and bustle but is still relatively chilled out. For a 'picture postcard' holiday then you have to visit the east coast of the Island, magical! The spice plantations are excellent, we had a guided tour around one and the smell and array of different spices was much more interesting than i expected. Also saw the red Colobus Monkeys in Jozani Forest which were jumping all about in the trees and by our feet. Found this site to be a good source of information, visas, vaccinations etc: www.discovertanzania.org .

(Report Problem)My Family and I discovered this wonderful, little lodge called "Saadani Safari Lodge" quite by chance on our recent trip to Tanzania. Our rooms where located on a deserted beach inside a national park which was a real thrill, as we saw lions, buffalo, giraffe and all sorts of antelope not five minutes from the lodge. The river trip however was the highlight, my kids loved being so close to crocodiles and Hippos and my wife took hundreds of bird photos. Coenraad and the staff are so friendly, really we had an excellent time.

(Report Problem)I visited Zanzibar as a single female and had a wonderful time! The people were great, the food fantastic and the scenery just out of this world. I spent most of my time in smaller hotels on the beaches up north and to the east and my last two nights at the Serena Inn, which was bliss. The island is quite poor, with most people living off tourism or fishing. I had been warned about walking by myself in Stone Town with a fancy camera, so I basically left everything behind whenever I was alone however I never had a problem of any sort. Next time (and I really hope there IS a next time!)I will take along paper and pencils/pens to give to the villagers, especially to the kids. The most beautiful spot I have seen in many years.

(Report Problem)What a wonderful place! Would love to retire there in the future. Have recommended traveling to Zanzibar to many people. Stayed in a small village, no phone, no TV, no stress. The Indian Ocean is a beautiful sight to wake up to. Can hardly wait to get back to the island!
