Rangiroa is for diving and snorkeling

three stars

I visited Rangiroa as part of my 8 island French Polynesia vacation in September of 2004. Rangiroa had the best scuba diving (at Motu Nohi Nohi) and snorkeling (Motu Nohi Nohi, and Ile aux Recifs) of any of the islands I visited. Ile aux Recifs was a great day-trip beach BBQ picnic. Swimming with about two dozen reef sharks was thrilling. On the down side, the villages of Avarua and Tiputa are so small, there's really nothing to do there. You will have to rely on your hotel for most of your needs. Don't even bother renting a car or moped, you'll exhaust the sightseeing opportunities in about 90 minutes! Because Rangiroa (and all the Tuamotus) are atolls, there are no mountains to look at or hike up. Also, there are very few overwater (OW) bungalows; I had to get a "garden room" and the mosquitoes were torture. You should only go to Rangiroa if you intend to spend most/all of your time in the water, and I highly recommend you get one of the OW's.
