Only one word can describe it: gorgeous. The most beautiful place I have ever seen.

(Report Problem)I visited 8 islands in French Polynesia in September of 2004 (Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, Taha'a, Bora Bora, Maupiti, Rangiroa). Of these, Bora Bora can easily be argued as the most photogenic of all. Despite being very developed in terms of tourist hotels (there may be a couple thousand OW's: overwater bungalows total), I did not feel that it has been ruined. Comfort and amenities are top notch. You definitely want to stay in an OW even though they cost more: the mosquitoes won't fly out that far and bother you. Also highly recommend you get a hotel on a motu (islet) not on the main island, because the beaches are much better. I stayed at the Bora Bora Pearl Resort on Motu Tevairoa. Snorkeling is a little better at Taha'a than Bora Bora, but you can use Bora Bora as "home base" and make a (full) day trip to any of Taha'a, Raiatea, or Maupiti. There are enough activities to keep you busy for at least a week. If you are put off by all the commercialism and want something more remote (and are willing to brave facilities more primitive), I would suggest instead staying at Taha'a or Huahine (but I still highly recommend an OW ... don't settle for a garden room or beachfront room).

(Report Problem)The most beautiful island in the world. Honest! We loved it there and finally managed to get a bit closer by moving to Hawaii. Because Bora Bora is slowly sinking with outlying motus rising up it has a very hard to match beauty. The water is an amazing blue that you have to see to believe. We stayed at the Le Meridien in an overwater bungalow. We watched fish swiming below the floor. Had drinks in the trade winds, and forgot about the world. On the motu there are places where you can walk that are completely deserted. It was the first time I could imagine being marooned, and it was way too scary. Fortunately a short ewalk back to the hotel and I was once again in touch with my fellow man. An unforgetable experience worth every single hard-earned doime!
