The Louvre relies mostly on it's reputation. Everything is in French with no translations, therefore seeing priceless pieces of art mean nothing since you don't know what you are looking at. Unfortunately if you go to Paris you have to go to the Louvre just to say you went but if you have a choice, I would recommend the Musee d'Orsay instead. This museum is the best in Paris with the Monet, Manet, and other impressionists. Pieces are written in english and the layout is easy to follow. If you go to the Louvre you should only go out of your way for 3 items...Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, and Winged Victory. Anything else just really isn't worth the effort. Trust me, Musee d'Orsay is the way to go!

(Report Problem)This IS the best museum in the world, but only if you study up first. Look through books about the Louvre's works of art and write down the ones you like the best; or, if you like Egyptian antiquities or Italian Renaissance paintings, research them. Take your list with you to the museum, and if you don't see them in the brochure, ask a tour guide where they're located. Museums are the most fun when you know what you're looking at, so do your homework! My personal faves are the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo (duh), but there are many other gorgeous works that the everyday person isn't aware of; make sure you get the most out of this excursion!
