(Report Problem)Palermo is a beautiful city that is at least worth a day trip if you are in the nearby vicinity... It has many different sights worth seeing, something for everyone. And the architecture is breathtaking!!!!

(Report Problem)Wonderful vacation spot. Trying to drive there was a challenge that I found fun but if you are timid or undecisive, get a taxi.

(Report Problem)Palermo was my first bite into Sicily and what a luscious treat it was! I expected a backwater, but what I got was a large, thriving, bustling, colorful, picturesque, city with Rococco and Baroque opulence. Arriving by overnight ferry from Naples to the city awakening, the farmers' and fish markets coming alive with friendly people everywhere glad to help tourists. Most Americans know of Sicily and Palermo as places where most of their Italian friends escaped poverty. This was true, but it has a very long history of being a rich and important nation (the "Kingdom of the Three Sicilies") and eventual part of Italy, with influences from Greece, Europe, North Africa, the Normans and beyond. With Palermo being the capital of Sicily, I expected that it would be the only big city, but I was so very wrong. In two weeks we visited many bustling cities, all rich in history and each adding to our waistlines. A car is indispensible. Because an Italian friend brought his car from the mainland, we saw at least 2 times what the ordinary tourist might see in a day, and we spent 14 days in Sicily. Take the time, however, for long walks in the cities. Your instincts will tell you that any given place must be a very important architectural treasure, and later you'll see it on a postcard.

(Report Problem)This is a great place if your willing to walk - in a cab you miss so much. See the people, enjoy the gelato and cannoli and be thankful you've seen the southern half of Italy, a different world for Milan and Rome. If you are willing to save a few euro and take a little more time, spend your nights at the youth hostel that's outside of the city & accessible by bus. The view of the sea was incredible and a year later, is still never far from my mind. Don't miss the catacombs and the cathedral in Monreale
